Ankara Opera Building

The Ankara Opera Building, which hosts performances by the Ankara State Opera and Ballet and Ankara State Theater was designed and built as an exhibition center and only later converted into an opera house. In 1933 the National Economy Community opened an international competition for the building stating that it had to be in modernist style. A proposal by Şevki Balmumcu received first prize and construction went ahead between 1933 and 1934. In 1948 Paul Bonatz converted the building into an opera house and his addition of traditional Turkish architectural details made it more “national.” Balmumcu was not consulted about the building’s renovation, which disappointed and professionally disturbed him for years to come. Description: The Treasury Building, at the corner of George and Queen Streets, was erected in three stages between 1886 and 1928. In 1883 a design competition for a two-storeyed building was won by Melbourne architects Grainger and D'Ebro. However this design was never used as the Queensland Colonial Architect, John James Clark, argued that the site warranted a four-storeyed complex. Clark's own design, entered in the competition prior to his appointment, was used. When completed in September 1889, the new building was occupied by the Premier, Colonial secretary, Registrar-General, Treasury, Mines, Works, Police and Auditor-General.

Stage two which completed the Elizabeth Street section was commenced almost immediately and was completed by February 1893. This new wing was occupied by the Registrar of Titles, Justice, Works, Public Instruction and the State Savings Bank. Work on the third state commenced in 1922 and officially opened in 1928, providing expanded accommodation for the existing tenants. The building is now home to an international casino and restaurants.

Today we have a carefully posed shot with boys sprinkled like raisins in a currant bun and a man, a teacher perhaps, sitting on a tree! In the background is what appears to be an enormous institutional type of building. I will be interested to see if we can identify this one...

....and indeed O Mac was relatively quick off the mark identifying the building as Saint Senan's Psychiatric Hospital, County Wexford. Also known as "Enniscorthy District Lunatic Asylum for the Insane Poor of Mind", it was opened in the 1860s, and there's a suggestion that this image was taken in the first decade(s) of its operation. Closed as a hospital within the last 5 years, viewing more recent photos of the building, one might be forgiven for thinking it had been shut for somewat longer.

The Hungarian Parliament Building

The Hungarian Parliament Building is the seat of the National Assembly of Hungary, one of Europe's oldest legislative buildings, a notable landmark of Hungary and a popular tourist destination of Budapest. It lies in Kossuth Lajos Square, on the bank of the Danube, in Budapest. It is currently the largest building in Hungary, and the second largest Parliament in Europe. Construction from the winning plan was started in 1885 and the building was inaugurated on the 1000th anniversary of the country in 1896, and completed in 1904. (The architect of the building went blind before its completion.) There were about one thousand people working on its construction in which 40 million bricks, half a million precious stones and 40 kg gold were used.

Former commissariat Stores building in Brisbane ca 1928

Description: The Commissariat Store in Brisbane is Queensland’s second-oldest building, surpassed only by the Old Observatory in Wickham Terrace. Constructed between May 1828 and December 1829 during the regime of Captain Patrick Logan, Commandant of the Moreton Bay penal settlement, the Commissariat Store is of Georgian design with freestone walls. In 1886 a single-storey brick building was added to the south-east wing, with a second storey being completed in 1900, though the entire wing was later demolished. In 1912-1913 a third storey was added to the entire existing structure.

When first completed, the Commissariat Store was contiguous to a wharf and crane for the convenient unloading of docked vessels. After fulfilling this role the building was used to house immigrants, as offices for the Queensland Law Reform Commission and as a repository for Queensland State Archives. Fittingly, the Commissariat Store now serves as the headquarters of the Royal Historical Society of Queensland. Günümüzde hem Ankara Devlet Opera ve Balesi temsillerine ev sahipliği yapan hem de Büyük Tiyatro adıyla Ankara Devlet Tiyatrosu için bir sahne olarak hizmet veren Ankara Opera Binası, ilk olarak bir sergi sarayı olarak inşa edildi, daha sonra opera binasına dönüştürüldü. Binanın tasarımına, Milli İktisat ve Tasarruf Cemiyeti’nin 1933’te açtığı uluslararası bir yarışma sonunda karar verildi. Yarışmanın duyurusunda, tasarımın modernist üslupta olması gerektiği özellikle belirtildi. Birinci seçilerek mimarı Şevki Balmumcu’ya büyük bir prestij kazandıran proje 1933-1934 yıllarında uygulandı. Paul Bonatz, 1948’te binayı işlevinden çok farklı olarak bir opera binasına çevirdi; Geleneksel Türk Mimarlığı’ndan detaylar ekleyerek binayı “millîleştirdi”. Tasarladığı binanın kendisine hiç danışılmadan, dönemin eğilimi olan İkinci Ulusal Mimarlık’a uygun hâle getirilmesi, Balmumcu’yu mesleki anlamda olumsuz etkiledi. Caddeye paralel uzanan ve birbirini dik kesen iki kitleden oluşan binanın bahçesinde Leyla Gencer, Cüneyt Gencer ve Muhsin Ertuğrul’un heykelleri bulunmaktadır.

Photograph of the (old) YMCA building in Keene New Hampshire, located on West Street at the site of the old Richardson Tavern. The building was erected in 1893 and membership totaled nearly 300 with an active program of events. The building was demolished in 1961. The Ashuelot National Bank was erected on this site in 1961-62.

Ankara Opera Building

The Ankara Opera Building, which hosts performances by the Ankara State Opera and Ballet and Ankara State Theater was designed and built as an exhibition center and only later converted into an opera house. In 1933 the National Economy Community opened an international competition for the building stating that it had to be in modernist style. A proposal by Şevki Balmumcu received first prize and construction went ahead between 1933 and 1934. In 1948 Paul Bonatz converted the building into an opera house and his addition of traditional Turkish architectural details made it more “national.” Balmumcu was not consulted about the building’s renovation, which disappointed and professionally disturbed him for years to come. In the garden of the building there are sculptures of Leyla Gencer, Cüneyt Gencer and Muhsin Ertuğrul.

The Hungarian Parliament Building

The Hungarian Parliament Building is the seat of the National Assembly of Hungary, one of Europe's oldest legislative buildings, a notable landmark of Hungary and a popular tourist destination of Budapest. It lies in Kossuth Lajos Square, on the bank of the Danube, in Budapest. It is currently the largest building in Hungary, and the second largest Parliament in Europe. Construction from the winning plan was started in 1885 and the building was inaugurated on the 1000th anniversary of the country in 1896, and completed in 1904. (The architect of the building went blind before its completion.) There were about one thousand people working on its construction in which 40 million bricks, half a million precious stones and 40 kg gold were used.

Lister Building, 1923-present

The new Lister building was completed and opened before the end of the year. The new building had a terra cotta lower façade, copper spandrels and a unique “L” shaped two storey arcade. The building was designated in 1996 under the Ontario Heritage Act. Recent major renovations have restored the building to its former glory and it is currently the home of offices of the City of Hamilton.

This splendid building can hardly be a Railway Station? We thought it must surely be a municipal building like a parliament, senate office or even art gallery...

... and with thanks to Niall McAuley, Greg Carey, and robinparkes who almost consecutively identifed this as Crumlin Road Courthouse in Belfast. O Mac notes that archtectural elements from our 19th century image differ from how it looks now. And unfortunately, per the drone flyby video that beachcomberaustralia shares, fires at the empty and undeveloped site have in recent decades have left the building a (literal) shell of its former self...
