Loch Beg, Isles of Mull, Argyll and Bute, Scotland, U.K. on the A879 Loch Scridain is a 15-kilometre-long (9-mile) sea loch, with a west-southwest aspect, on the western, or Atlantic coastline of the Isle of Mull, in the Inner Hebrides, Argyll and Bute, Scotland. Loch Scridain extends inland as far as the island's only Munro and extinct volcano, Ben More, a large massif on the Ardmeanach peninsula to the north; the imposing Bearraich hill overlooks the mouth of the loch. To the south is the Ross of Mull, the longest peninsula on Mull, that reaches past the sea loch boundary into the Atlantic. Near the head of Loch Scridain is the Aird of Kinloch, a small peninsula that almost separates the main loch from the small inner sea loch, Loch Beg. Loch Beg is fed by the River Coladoir. Seabank Villa on the lochside at Kilfinichen Bay is the type locality for the mineral mullite. Loch Scridain has three settlements, Tiroran, Kilfinichen, and Pennyghael, with a total population of about 60. The A849 to Bunessan and Fionnphort runs along the southern shore of the loch and there is a turn off in Pennyghael to Carsaig Bay. Loch Scridain to the Ardmeanach peninsula is a lava landscape in which the lava flows have created a layered effect. Basalt lava is rich in minerals and the land between the crags is green and fertile. There is black basalt, stained orange in places. St John's Cross

St John's Cross, on Iona stands over 14 feet high and, on its stepped base, well over 16 feet, and is made of red granite. It is very similar in sculptural design to some of the Irish high crosses, with its typical ring-head. One of its faces has scenes from the Bible, while the opposite face has Celtic-style decoration and bosses; but it is a beautifully and richly carved monument, which is thought to date from around 800 AD although some think it may date from the 6th Century – at which time it would have been set-up and dedicated to St Martin of Tours (320-401). So, we might ask: did St Columba have a hand in the setting up of the cross? There is a replica of the 8th or 10th Century St John’s Cross, the original is in the abbey museum (along with St Matthew’s Cross) and has a serpent with boss and spirals. St John the Evangelist was the apostle of Christ. There is also MacLean’s Cross though this is more recent, still, and dates from the 15th Century; it is named after a chief of the clan MacLean. Chapel ruins, Iona, Argyll and Bute, Scotland, U.K The nunnery was founded after the establishment of the Benedictine monastery, which was likely founded by Raghnall mac Somhairle in 1203. Raghnall's sister, Bethóc, became the first prioress. This was one of the two Augustinian nunneries in Scotland, St. Leonards Nunnery located at Perth being the other. In the Abbey museum of the nearby Iona Abbey, the top half of a headstone of Anna MacLean, a prioress of the monastery of nuns who died in 1543, is on display. Restoration work on the nunnery occurred in 1923 and 1993. The construction of the Iona Nunnery follows the typical Irish style. The Church consists of a building with three bays with a passage to the north side and a small chapel on the east side of the passage. The current monastery garden measures 14 metres square, but it was originally smaller. The east wing had three rooms on the ground level, above was the dormitory. The south wing contained the refectory. In the sixteenth century, a floor was added. The west wing is below the modern road and was most likely the guest's wing. St Augustine Nunnery.
