Mormon Lake is the largest natural lake in Arizona... sometimes. During droughts it's frequently not so large, and not so much a lake. Occasionally it's even bone dry. Wet or not, this has an excellent overlook where you can often see wildlife and birds across the lake's landscape. In the late summer of 2016, a large herd of elk took up residence. View from the edge of the Mogollon Rim along the Rim Road (FR 300). The Mogollon Rim is one of the most striking geologic features in Arizona. This steep escarpment, measured in thousands of feet and hundreds of miles, begins just across the border in New Mexico and stretches diagonally two thirds of the way across Arizona. It forms the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau, and is one of the most impressive overlooks in the Grand Canyon State. Springtime at Schultz Tank

Following a winter of heavy snows, Schultz Tank was full to the point of overflowing in the spring of 2017. This is the view of the smaller, upper tank. Schultz Tank is a man-made pond nestled between the San Francisco Peaks and Dry Lake Hills at Schultz Pass. Two earthen dams create a pair of reservoirs along the drainage, creating a small upper tank and larger lower tank. The tank is a haven for wildlife. A few ducks will live on the pond through the summer months. Small birds can usually be seen cavorting over the pond chasing flying insects. On quiet days, elk and deer may appear in the twilight hours. To ensure wildlife have access to water, state law prohibits camping within a quarter mile of a wildlife tank. Waterfall Trail on Fossil Creek

A large, natural waterfall on Fossil Creek is the destination of an easy, one mile hike on Waterfall Trail. A large, deep pool at the base of the fall is a popular swimming hole. Fossil Creek produces 20,000 gallons of water a minute from a series of springs at the bottom of a 1,600 foot deep canyon. This permanent water source has created a stunningly beautiful, green riparian zone rich with flora and fauna at the bottom of this arid canyon in Arizona's high desert. Travertine deposits encase whatever happens to fall into the streambed, forming the fossils for which the area is named. These deposits create deep pools along the length of the creek, providing opportunities to find more secluded swimming holes than the popular pool at the waterfall. Fossil Creek is one of two "Wild and Scenic" rivers in Arizona. This designation was achieved when the Irving power plant was decommissioned, and removal of flume and dam on the creek allowed the creek to flow free. Increasing popularity has led to the Coconino and Tonto National Forests to implement a parking permit reservation system in 2016. Reserved parking permits allow visitors to have a parking spot available in their chosen parking lot. Many visitors drive two or three hours to get to the creek. The final descent to the creek at the bottom of a canyon is on an extremely rough, rocky jeep road. Fall color on Inner Basin Trail, October 5, 2016. Most trees are peaking or approaching peak color all along the Inner Basin Trail. Trees are approaching or at peak on the lower on Inner Basin Trail and in Lockett Meadow. A majority of the trees are at peak or past peak (and dropping leaves) on the upper part of the trail above Jack Smith Spring and in the Inner Basin. The Inner Basin Trail ascends from Lockett Meadow into the caldera of the San Francisco Peaks, an extinct volcano and home of the tallest peaks in Arizona. The first 1.7 miles of the trail winds through the extensive aspen forest flanking the upper reaches of the Peaks, joining the Waterline Trail briefly before following a jeep road into the caldera. The trail starts at an elevation of 8665 feet, gaining approximately 1200 feet over 2 miles on its way into the Inner Basin. The sun rises as the last wisps of a passing storm blanket the San Francisco Peaks. Fall color on the San Francisco Peaks, viewed from the White Horse Hills along Forest Road 418, October 2, 2016. This drive takes you all the way around Arizona's highest mountain, winding through a land of pine forests and aspen groves, open prairies and rustic homesteads. Autumn turns the mountain to gold, filling forest roads and trails with visitors come to enjoy the colorful display. Because the road becomes very rough and rocky between Bear Jaw and Abineau canyons, a mid to high clearance vehicle is required to complete the loop. However, fall color can be seen on either end of the road accessible to low clearance passenger cars. There are a number of places along this route where you can stop to take a hike, enjoy a lunch or even set up a primitive camp. That way you can take more than one day to do this drive or combine it with one or more of the other scenic drives in the vicinity of the San Francisco Peaks. The White Horse Hills are northwest of the Abineau-Bear Jaw Trailhead entrance on the north side of the road. A large, natural waterfall on Fossil Creek is the destination of an easy, one mile hike on Waterfall Trail. A large, deep pool at the base of the fall is a popular swimming hole. Fossil Creek produces 20,000 gallons of water a minute from a series of springs at the bottom of a 1,600 foot deep canyon. This permanent water source has created a stunningly beautiful, green riparian zone rich with flora and fauna at the bottom of this arid canyon in Arizona's high desert. Travertine deposits encase whatever happens to fall into the streambed, forming the fossils for which the area is named. These deposits create deep pools along the length of the creek, providing opportunities to find more secluded swimming holes than the popular pool at the waterfall. Fossil Creek is one of two "Wild and Scenic" rivers in Arizona. This designation was achieved when the Irving power plant was decommissioned, and removal of flume and dam on the creek allowed the creek to flow free. Increasing popularity has led to the Coconino and Tonto National Forests to implement a parking permit reservation system in 2016. Reserved parking permits allow visitors to have a parking spot available in their chosen parking lot. Many visitors drive two or three hours to get to the creek. The final descent to the creek at the bottom of a canyon is on an extremely rough, rocky jeep road. In prior years, the area would often be closed to entry when it reached capacity, and potential visitors would be turned away after the long, difficult drive. Wet or not, this has an excellent overlook where you can often see wildlife and birds across the lake's landscape. In the late summer of 2016, a large herd of elk took up residence. This permanent water source has created a stunningly beautiful, green riparian zone rich with flora and fauna at the bottom of this arid canyon in Arizona's high desert. Travertine deposits encase whatever happens to fall into the streambed, forming the fossils for which the area is named. These deposits create deep pools along the length of the creek, providing opportunities to find more secluded swimming holes than the popular pool at the waterfall. Fossil Creek is one of two "Wild and Scenic" rivers in Arizona. This designation was achieved when the Irving power plant was decommissioned, and removal of flume and dam on the creek allowed the creek to flow free. Increasing popularity has led to the Coconino and Tonto National Forests to implement a parking permit reservation system in 2016. Reserved parking permits allow visitors to have a parking spot available in their chosen parking lot. Many visitors drive two or three hours to get to the creek. The final descent to the creek at the bottom of a canyon is on an extremely rough, rocky jeep road. In prior years, the area would often be closed to entry when it reached capacity, and potential visitors would be turned away after the long, difficult drive.
