When it comes to sculptures, I am intrigues by details. Was the detail deliberate and part of a message or just a detail that was needed to make the piece complete? Here on the lawn just north of the East Block on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Ontario, the sculpture of William Lyon Mackenzie King stands looking towards one of the parliament buildings. The sculpture is in a more modern style compared to the many other bronze statues of former prime ministers and other political figures that dot the ground of the parliament. The left hand of Mackenzie King is the detail that interests me the most. Was this a typical posture for the former prime minister? Or is this some commentary on either him or politicians in general? When I was in grade school, it was common for the students to make false promises with one hand behind one's back and fingers crossed. While perhaps an appropriate gesture for a politician, is it perhaps is a commentary on King's honesty? I prefer to not research the intentions of the artist and let the uncertainly remain. Discovering the true meaning (or lack of meaning) in the hand position would result in a reduced interest in the sculpture. A gloss (ḥāshiyah) by Kemalpaşazade (d. 940 AH / 1533 CE) on the commentary on the Koran (Qur’an) composed by ʿAbd Allāh al-Bayḍawī (d. ca. 685 AH / 1286 CE) and entitled Anwār al-tanzīl. Transcribed in 966 AH / 1558 CE, this elegant copy was made from the author's holograph by ʿUthmān ibn Manṣūr. This is the decorated incipit page with a rectangular headpiece carrying the doxological formula (basmalah) written in white tawqīʿ script on gold background. The Bernina Express is an express train connecting Chur (or Davos) in Switzerland with Poschiavo and Tirano in Italy, by crossing the Swiss Alps from north to south. For most of its journey, the train also passes along and through the World Heritage Site known as the Rhaetian Railway in the Albula / Bernina Landscapes. The train is operated by the Rhaetian Railway company. It is not an "express" in the sense of being a high-speed train, but, rather, in the sense that it provides a one-seat ride for a long duration trip. The Bernina Express itself is composed of panoramic coaches with a piped multi-lingual commentary, and a small supplement and seat reservation are both obligatory. The train is popular with tourists, and connects in Tirano with the Post Bus service via Lake Como in Italy to Lugano in Switzerland. The Albula line and the Bernina line on the Bernina Express route were jointly declared a World Heritage Site in 2008. The trip on the Bernina Express through this World Heritage Site is a 4 hour railway journey across 196 bridges, through 55 tunnels and across the Bernina Pass on the highest point at 2,253 metres in altitude. The entire line is 1,000 mm (3 ft 3 3⁄8 in) (metre gauge). The Albula line was constructed between 1898 and 1904, and has been operated by the Rhaetian Railway ever since. The Bernina Railway built the Bernina line between 1908-1910, and then operated it independently until the 1940s, when the Rhaetian Railway took it over. Once mud season has ended, tennis season begins. Lets face it. The most compelling part of tennis is the scoring. The counting of points is simply brilliant. Early achievements are worth 15 points. But after achieving twice, an achievement in tennis becomes less notable. A third achievement is only worth 40 points. Of course this makes complete sense. The first time something happens is it very notable. The second time is important as well as it proves that this something is repeatable and not just a fluke. By the time the third something happens it is becoming old hat, derivative and less original. The fourth time the something happens it is time to move on entirely and it is not worth points at all. Tennis is more than a sport, it is social commentary! If tennis scoring has been simplified to 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and having to win by at least two points, tennis would be boring. It simply would not be played. On the other hand any sport that begins with love and ends with match has a lot going for it. Written for the library of the Ottoman Sultan Selim I, it was executed in Bursa in 918 AH / 1512 CE, the year of his accession to the throne. It is very likely that the scribe is also the author of this work. This folio contains the end of the text and the colophon. Virtually turn the pages of this manuscript on Walters Ex Libris: manuscripts.thewalters.org/viewer.php?id=W.591#page/176/m.
