This Psalter-Hours was made for a Franciscan community in Cologne, Germany, in the late thirteenth century. It is especially notable for its large program of illuminations, which includes roundels in the calendar depicting the labors of the month, two full-page miniatures, fourteen historiated initials, and grotesques perched upon the top of bar borders throughout. It is identical in style to Baltimore, Walters Ms. W.111, and both are related to the style of Liège manuscripts of the 1280s-90s. They are also considered to be stylistic precursors of works by Johannes von Valkenburg, such as two graduals he created for Franciscans in Cologne in 1299 (Cologne, Diözesan Bibliothek Ms. 1B and Bonn, Universitätsbibliothek Ms. 384). All manuscript images and descriptions were created and are provided through Preservation and Access grants awarded to the Walters Art Museum by the National Endowment for the Humanities, 2008-2014. Hygrophorus is a genus of agarics (gilled mushrooms) in the family Hygrophoraceae. Called "woodwaxes" in the UK or "waxy caps" (together with Hygrocybe species) in North America, basidiocarps (fruit bodies) are typically fleshy, often with slimy caps and lamellae that are broadly attached to decurrent. All species are ground-dwelling and ectomycorrhizal (forming an association with living trees) and are typically found in woodland. Around 100 species are currently recognized worldwide. The Building of the Italian Civilization, known also as Building of the Civilization of the Job or simply Square Colosseum is one of the symbols of the EUR, district in Rome, and it is considered as the architectural icon of the Nine hundred Roman and exemplary model of the monumentalità of the district. About 100 black swans were brought to the South Island from Australia in the 1860s, and the species has traditionally been regarded as introduced. However, numbers have increased faster than expected, suggesting more birds arrived independently – in which case it should be considered a self-introduced native. My submission to Flickr Commons: Kilburn Grange cinema (1914-1975) on Kilburn High, showing Passions of Men among others. A film called "The Passions of Men" was made in 1914, which is the same year Kilburn Grange Cinema opened. I think this should be considered as having a CC0 license, ie no copyright restrictions, which is what the cultural organisations participating in the Commons give to the majority of their posted photos. After all, we didn't take the photos - those who did will largely be deceased, and I think the copyright on them will also have expired. In this case sadly, I have no idea who the original photographer was - it would be nice to credit them when the picture is used!

This weekend I visited the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro, North Carolina. I saw so many fascinating organisms there, but this Polar Bear (Ursus Maritimus) during his feeding time was one of the most striking. Polar Bears are apex predators as well as a keystone species in their Arctic habitats. Predominately carnivores, Polar Bears love to eat harbor seals. However, they will scavenge when their primary prey is in shortage. Human influence and global warming has greatly impacted the Polar Bear populations. In their Arctic habitats, Polar Bears live on ice and will swim to travel and to find food. As the ice melts more rapidly due to climate change, Polar Bears have increased chances of dying trying to hunt their food with not as many areas to land for a rest in between swims. Also, Poaching has negatively effected Polar Bear populations. Sadly, the Polar Bear is considered a "vulnerable" species with scientists predicting a very grim future for the future populations of Polar Bears. From the curation card: Jean de Thévenot was a linguist, natural scientist, botanist, and traveler who wrote extensively about his journeys to the eastern Mediterranean and Turkey. He is also the man we can thank for introducing coffee to Parisian society in 1657 and for instructing the French in its use. A hot spring discharges 77°C (~171°F) water into Hot Springs Creek, Akutan Island, Alaska, Akutan Volcano (photo). Numerous industry-led geophysical studies and test drilling in the past few years have proven the existence of a geothermal resource. USGS field studies completed in 2012 suggest that the available geothermal resource may be even larger than previously recognized. The current heat output of the hot spring system is estimated at 29 megawatts – nearly ten times higher than measured in the early 1980s. This large increase may reflect the volcanic and seismic events of the 1990s, and if so, it cannot be considered a short-term anomaly. Modern geothermal plants could use this heat to generate several MW of electricity. One MW of electric power would supply the needs of about 750 homes. The Old Bridge

"The Citroën 2CV (French: "deux chevaux" i.e. "deux chevaux-vapeur" (lit. 'steam horses'), "two tax horsepower") was an economy car produced by the French car manufacturer Citroën between 1948 and 1990. It was technologically advanced and innovative, but with uncompromisingly utilitarian unconventional looks, and deceptively simple Bauhaus and Junkers early all metal aircraft inspired bodywork (corrugated for added strength without added weight), that belied the sheer quality of its underlying engineering. It was designed to motorise the large number of small-holder farmers in 1930s France, who were still using horses and carts. It is considered one of Citroën's most iconic cars. In 1953 Autocar in a technical review of the car wrote of "the extraordinary ingenuity of this design, which is undoubtedly the most original since the Model T Ford". It was described by Car Magazine journalist and author L. J. K. Setright as "the most intelligent application of minimalism ever to succeed as a car". It was designed for low cost, simplicity of use and maintenance, versatility, reliability, low fuel consumption and off-road driving. For this it had a light, easily serviceable engine, extremely soft long travel suspension (with height adjustment by lengthening/shortening of tie rods) high ground clearance, and for oversized loads a car-wide canvas sunroof, which (until 1955) also covered the boot. During a production run of 42 years between 1948 and 1990, 3,872,583 2CVs were produced, plus 1,246,306 Fourgonnettes (small 2CV delivery vans), as well as spawning mechanically identical vehicles including the Ami: 1,840,396; the Dyane: 1,444,583; the Acadiane: 253,393; and the Mehari: 144,953, a grand total of 8,756,688, of which there are still 3,382 on the road in the UK as of January 2013. From 1988 onwards, production took place in Portugal (Mangualde) rather than in France. This arrangement lasted for two years until 2CV production halted. Portuguese built cars, especially those from when production was winding down, have a reputation in the UK for being much less well made and more prone to corrosion than those made in France.
