The Pitcher Plant and the Bee

This Memorial Day weekend I went for my first visit to the Stanley Rehder Carnivorous Plant Garden off of Independence Boulevard in Wilmington, North Carolina. I discovered an array of pitcher plants including the species pictured Sarrancenia Leucophylla. It was fascinating how many Bumble Bees or (Class: Insecta, Order: Hymenoptera, Family: Apidae, Genus: Bombus, and unsure of this species?) were flying around the plants and even crawling into them. I began to wonder if the bees had a strictly mutualistic relationship with the pitcher plants acting solely as pollinators. Also, I saw quite a few bees get stuck in the tubes of the pitcher plant and it appeared that the pitcher plant could be acting as a predator to the bees. Were the pitcher plants luring them into their tubes to provide a source of mineral nutrients for the plant? After doing some research, I found that it is not evolutionarily beneficial for pitcher plants to consume their own pollinators, thus why they have two distinct parts for each function. The flowering part of the pitcher plant (shown in the background of the photo) is the part responsible for attracting pollinators. My childhood dream was home for christmas

I finally went to pick up Sun, my beloved pup, at her foster home. She has been at home with me for 2 full days and I had the best christmas EVER with her. For the first time in my life I did not have to wish real christmas eve to get a dog someday. It feels so unreal that my dream has finally come true, and that I could ADOPT my favorite dog breed is such a blessing. Corgis are really not common here!. I finally went to pick up Sun, my beloved pup, at her foster home. She has been at home with me for 2 full days and I had the best christmas EVER with her. For the first time in my life I did not have to wish real christmas eve to get a dog someday. It feels so unreal that my dream has finally come true, and that I could ADOPT my favorite dog breed is such a blessing. Corgis are really not common here!

The round window was made during the renovation as a path for rooks to the nest. The new interior of the church was completed in the Neo-Gothic style, and it has a capacity of 500 people. The belfry was built in the 17th century, and the original wooden upper part was replaced with the new brick part in the 1850s. The church is the oldest building around Helsinki area. Mogosoaia Palace - Bibesco family vault

Mogoşoaia Palace is situated about 10 kilometres from Bucharest, Romania. It was built between 1698-1702 by Constantin Brâncoveanu in what is called the Romanian Renaissance style or Brâncovenesc style, a combination of Venetian and Ottoman elements. The palace bears the name of the widow of the Romanian boyar Mogoş, who owned the land it was built on. The Palace was to a large extent rebuilt in the 1920s by Marthe Bibesco. During the second world war, Prince Antoine Bibesco (a cousin of George Bibesco) and his wife Elizabeth Bibesco, refused to flee the country despite their outspoken anti-fascist opinions. When Elizabeth died of pneumonia on April 7, 1945 she was buried in the Bibesco family vault on the grounds of Mogoşoaia. It may surprise visitors to see her grave here with its poignant epitaph in English - My soul has gained the freedom of the night. Neither Elizabeth Bibesco's husband, Antoine, or George Bibesco's wife, Marthe, could be buried beside them, as they both died during the Communist regime. It is estimated that in some species the combined grip of each toe could support the weight of up to 40kg. That is equivalent to a small teenage human! The day geckos are a group of stunningly beautiful lizards, many with bright green, red, blue or yellow markings. The giant day gecko is no exception. It is bright emerald green in colour with large dark eyes and patches of red on the lower back and sometimes also on the head. These are large lizards with males reaching almost 30cm in total length. While not particularly aggressive, if handled incorrectly they will attempt to bite and have very powerful jaws. In 2001 the last of Nanton’s grain elevator row was threatened by demolition because of recent abandonment of the Canadian Pacific Railway that the elevators stood next to. Many worried citizens in and around the town of Nanton had realized that a part of the town's and province's history was about to be torn down and lost forever. The concerned citizens of Nanton had rallied together and formed a Historical Society appropriately named "Save One". Of course the original goal of the save one effort was to do just that, save one, but before anything could be done to save the elevator the Society had to gain full title to the land and buildings. Which was a big undertaking that would take three years to achieve. With so many volunteer hours from many local businesses and citizens, the Society was so successful that not only did they end up saving just one elevator, but all three remaining elevators. Many donations from members and surrounding farmers-ranchers, have been made and have helped in replacing the railway tracks next to the elevators the completion of many of the repairs and restorations that needed to be done on the elevators. Including painting the former Alberta Wheat Pool back to its original green and the former Pioneer elevator back to the original orange & yellow. Mother Dasha and one of her two cubs from the Zoo Duisburg in Germany. Dasha is just three years old and these are her first cubs but she is doing a fantastic job raising them! They are healthy and often you can see her playing with them. She lets them chase her and hides from them behind tree trunks and large rocks inside their big enclosure. The zoo staff is very proud of her for doing such a fantastic job! She and El-Roi, their male tiger, just got together in late April when their new enclosure was unveiled to the public and they already produced healthy offspring.
