Woods Canyon Trail No. 93

Snowmelt from a series winter storms in late January 2017 followed by rain and warm weather in February had dry creekbeds running and many of Arizona's reservoirs filled and overflowing. Dry Beaver Creek in Woods Canyon was no exception. Woods Canyon Trail is level and unshaded as it follows a jeep road into the wide canyon mouth for 1.25 miles. The road ends and the trail continues, climbing gradually. There are views of the vegetation-covered slopes of mesas on either side. The trail enters Munds Mountain Wilderness continuing its easy climb. The trail approaches and then follows Dry Beaver Creek. At the confluence with Rattlesnake Canyon, the trail emerges onto a picturesque expanse of redrock studded with huge, gray boulders. On the western flank of the San Francisco Peaks, Aspen Loop Trail is a moderate 2 mile loop trail descending through a beautiful forest of aspen, fir, and pine to meet the Arizona National Scenic Trail Passage 34. The trail offers views of the San Francisco Peaks, Kendrick Mountain, and hills to the west of the Peaks. The trail splits at around the half-mile mark. Follow either fork to the Arizona Trail, and follow the signs along the Arizona Trail to the return trail to complete the loop. The sun rises as the last wisps of a passing storm blanket the San Francisco Peaks. Fall color on the San Francisco Peaks, viewed from the White Horse Hills along Forest Road 418, October 2, 2016. This drive takes you all the way around Arizona's highest mountain, winding through a land of pine forests and aspen groves, open prairies and rustic homesteads. Autumn turns the mountain to gold, filling forest roads and trails with visitors come to enjoy the colorful display. Because the road becomes very rough and rocky between Bear Jaw and Abineau canyons, a mid to high clearance vehicle is required to complete the loop. However, fall color can be seen on either end of the road accessible to low clearance passenger cars. There are a number of places along this route where you can stop to take a hike, enjoy a lunch or even set up a primitive camp. That way you can take more than one day to do this drive or combine it with one or more of the other scenic drives in the vicinity of the San Francisco Peaks. The White Horse Hills are northwest of the Abineau-Bear Jaw Trailhead entrance on the north side of the road. When it comes to sculptures, I am intrigues by details. Was the detail deliberate and part of a message or just a detail that was needed to make the piece complete? Here on the lawn just north of the East Block on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Ontario, the sculpture of William Lyon Mackenzie King stands looking towards one of the parliament buildings. The sculpture is in a more modern style compared to the many other bronze statues of former prime ministers and other political figures that dot the ground of the parliament. The left hand of Mackenzie King is the detail that interests me the most. Was this a typical posture for the former prime minister? Or is this some commentary on either him or politicians in general? When I was in grade school, it was common for the students to make false promises with one hand behind one's back and fingers crossed. While perhaps an appropriate gesture for a politician, is it perhaps is a commentary on King's honesty? I prefer to not research the intentions of the artist and let the uncertainly remain. Discovering the true meaning (or lack of meaning) in the hand position would result in a reduced interest in the sculpture. The Trevi Fountain The Trevi Fountain (Italian: Fontana di Trevi) is a fountain in the Trevi rione in Rome, Italy. Standing 25.9 meters (85 feet) high and 19.8 meters (65 feet) wide, it is the largest Baroque fountain in the city. The present fountain. Commission, construction and design In 1629 Pope Urban VIII, finding the earlier fountain insufficiently dramatic, asked Gian Lorenzo Bernini to sketch possible renovations, but when the Pope died, the project was abandoned. Bernini's lasting contribution was to resite the fountain from the other side of the square to face the Quirinal Palace (so the Pope could look down and enjoy it). Though Bernini's project was torn down for Salvi's fountain, there are many Bernini touches in the fountain as it was built. An early, striking and influential model by Pietro da Cortona, preserved in the Albertina, Vienna, also exists, as do various early 18th century sketches, most unsigned, as well as a project attributed to Nicola Michetti one attributed to Ferdinando Fuga and a French design by Edme Bouchardon. During the occupation of the city by the Al-Qaeda-affiliated militant group Al Shabaab up until August 2011, many Somali artists were either forced to work in secret or stop practising their art all together for fear of retribution and punishment by the extremist group who were fighting to overthrow the internationally-recognised then transitional government and implement a strict and harsh interpretation of Islamic Sharia law. After 20 years of near-constant conflict, Mogadishu and large areas of Somalia are now enjoying the longest period of peace in years after sustained military operations by the Somali National Army (SNA) backed by the forces of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) forced Al Shabaab to retreat from many areas of the country precipitating something of a renaissance for Somali artists and business, commerce, sports and civil liberties and freedoms flourishing once again. Oak Creek Canyon

Oak Creek Canyon is a gorge carved into the edge of the Mogollon Rim of the Colorado Plateau along the Oak Creek Fault. Tectonic forces shifting the land to either side of the fault and subsequent erosion by Oak Creek have created a spectacular canyon where the geologic history of this area is an open book. The Canyon is approximately 12 miles long. Oak Creek flows year-round along the bottom of the Canyon, providing water for plants and wildlife, as well as fishing and swimming opportunities. Oak Creek continues on through Sedona, Arizona, meeting up with the Verde River southeast of Cottonwood, Arizona. The depth of the Canyon ranges from 800 to 2000 feet, with trails providing access from the Canyon’s bottom up to the 6500-foot eastern rim and 7200-foot western rim. Some of these trails follow historic routes early Oak Creek Canyon settlers used to access the top of the plateau in the days before the road was built. On the western flank of the San Francisco Peaks, Aspen Loop Trail is a moderate 2 mile loop trail descending through a beautiful forest of aspen, fir, and pine to meet the Arizona National Scenic Trail Passage 34. The trail offers views of the San Francisco Peaks, Kendrick Mountain, and hills to the west of the Peaks. The trail splits at around the half-mile mark. Follow either fork to the Arizona Trail, and follow the signs along the Arizona Trail to the return trail to complete the loop.
