James Terrell Miller, 1918

In 1913 King and Ben Thompson purchased 840 acres of the Miller family farm from James Terrell Miller to form the original land tract for the City of Upper Arlington. James T. Miller is considered the first resident of Upper Arlington and was elected as mayor soon after it was incorporated as a village in March 1918. Born in Columbus on August 14, 1846, Mr. Miller married Miss Esther Everett in 1869. They had eight children: Samuel Huston, Henry, Eliza (Mrs. E. D. Howard), Grace, Nancy, Almeda, Jessie, and Ella. In 1856, his father, Henry Miller, bought the 850 acres that later became the majority of the plat for Upper Arlington, because he felt a move to the country would improve James' health. The family home grew to contain 22 rooms and was one of the first six houses in Columbus outfitted with plumbing. The Miller family actively farmed the land and raised horses and shorthorn cattle. Henry, James, and Samuel Huston also operated a shoe business with stores in Columbus and Pittsburg.

Upper Arlington Red Cross Unit, 1918

On August 19, 1918, the first meeting of the Upper Arlington Red Cross Unit was held in the ballroom of the home of Ben Thompson. Katherine Thompson (Mrs. Ben Thompson) was the chairman of the unit. The group met each week on Tuesday afternoons. With an average attendance of thirteen, the unit produced hospital shirts, comfort bags, pillowcases, and towels for the war relief effort.

At the end of World War I, the women of the Upper Arlington Red Cross Unit decided to continue meeting to discuss the needs and general welfare of the community. The group continued to meet under their new name, the Norwester Women's Club. The first meeting of the Norwester Women's Club was held on March 28, 1919, at which time Mrs. Frank Rogers was elected their president.

Appearing in the picture are: Mrs. Hayes, Helen Miller (Mrs. Harvey Miller), Mrs. Hoffman, Eliza Howard, Mrs. Nance, Mrs. Kern, Marion Roberta O'Brien, Mrs. Rogers, Mrs. Henry Miller, Nellie Dunlap, Carey Rolf, Mrs. Williams, Ethel Thompson (Mrs. King Thompson), Katherine Thompson (Mrs. Ben Thompson), Katherine Carmack, Jessie Miller, Nancy Miller, Grace Miller, Allie Miller, and Lollie Miller.
