The draft (American) or draught (British) of a ship's hull is the vertical distance between the waterline and the bottom of the hull (keel), with the thickness of the hull included; in the case of not being included the draft outline would be obtained. Draft determines the minimum depth of water a ship or boat can safely navigate. The draft can also be used to determine the weight of the cargo on board by calculating the total displacement of water and then using Archimedes' principle. A table made by the shipyard shows the water displacement for each draft. The density of the water (salt or fresh) and the content of the ship's bunkers has to be taken into account. I have no idea what kind of plant this is, but it's vivid colors, backlit, growing in a ditch next to a road, grabbed my attention. I don't need it back. Update: Surprised, humbled, honored to be explored, especially for a photo I almost skipped, and for one taken with an iPhone. More at the Inside the Photo barkingdog.me/photos/2665. Current (1964) by Bridget Riley is a work at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. Done in synthetic polymer paint on composition board, the curation card notes: Current's undulating black-and-white lines appear to vibrate and form three-dimensional depressions that quiver on the painting's surface. The juxtaposition of black and white activates the painting with the semblance of movement and the appearance of other colors. In this and other early works, Riley "wanted the space between the picture plane and the spectator to be active." She later explored color contrast. Location: SCAPE 7 Art Central - corner of Gloucester and Colombo Streets, Christchurch Consisting of ten modular objects that read and function both as trees and as houses, Julia Morison’s work can be engaged with and explored on many levels. The work incorporates light and plant forms, and creates spaces within itself for reflection and play. This significant legacy piece will remain as a permanent, re-locatable work in Christchurch City. Sumatran tigers are the smallest surviving tiger subspecies and are distinguished by heavy black stripes on their orange coats. They are protected by law in Indonesia, with tough provisions for jail time and steep fines. But despite increased efforts in tiger conservation—including law enforcement and antipoaching capacity—a substantial market remains in Sumatra and the rest of Asia for tiger parts and products. Sumatran tigers are losing their habitat and prey fast, and poaching shows no sign of decline. I was fascinated by yellow hue of the lights contrasting with the blue tones in the stone and water when I came across this unassuming bridge. Explored on 27.07.2013.
