Frankton is located on the edge of a larger area referred to as the Frankton Flats, which is the area of land approximately bounded by Lake Wakatipu, the Kawarau and Shotover Rivers, and State Highway 6 to towards Cromwell. The Frankton Flats is located in the Wakatipu Basin and enjoys longer sunshine hours, particularly in winter, than the majority of land in central Queenstown, which is predominantly south facing. On the water, it appears all black with a bright red bill; however, in flight the bird shows wide white wing margins. It has a bugle-like call, and hisses to defend its nest. Native or introduced? About 100 black swans were brought to the South Island from Australia in the 1860s, and the species has traditionally been regarded as introduced. However, numbers have increased faster than expected, suggesting more birds arrived independently â€“ in which case it should be considered a self-introduced native. The 104 year old steam tug Lyttelton is just about the only bit of historic Lyttelton intact after the earth quake. But it needs a bit of help to keep going in its second century. The Tug Lyttelton Preservation Society is looking for volunteers to keep the tug steaming. The magic of steam has been with the Port since the 19th century which has seen the Lyttelton village grow, briefly stumble with an earthquake, and now plan for a bright new future. That the steam tug TSST LYTTELTON has survived the passing of the steam era, with the advent of modern diesel powered vessels, is no coincidence. It has survived because she is, has been and always will be, one of Port Lytteltonâ€™s icons. An icon that remains proud and a talisman to show that Lyttelton will survive whatever may come. It is an an active, mobile species that moves about frequently, including making sea crossings. Just a 20 minute drive from Laoag, its also pretty convenient for a quick trip to the beach. and of course coconut trees. Watch out for the colourful Bilog fishing boats which can be hired for memorable pleasure trips.
