Western tanager. 2009-05-07: On the fifth day of our camping trip on the Mogollon Rim we were still looking to beat the heat by staying above the rim. I’d noticed a route marked as a trail on my GPS (the base map on my Garmin Oregon 400T) leading to a spot marked Lost Lake. We headed for trail, turning off of the main road onto a jeep track. The route quickly got rocky, and we assumed it was petering out, so we parked and started hiking. Within a couple hundred feet, the route turned back into a smooth, dirt, two-track road… basically, quite driveable. We hiked it anyway. There was a tree blocking the road about halfway to Lost Lake, but aside from that the route is a well maintained route, with a couple side-roads heading off of it. The road gently ascends to the top of a hill, where Lost Lake is actually a pair of tanks. The upper tank is quite large, and both had water in them. There were a few wildflowers, and butterflies and western tanagers were flitting about. It’s a very pretty area, and quite likely an excellent place for bird watching. Lost Lake is definitely worth a visit, whether hiking or driving. The tanks are surrounded by forest, and we took advantage of the shade to have lunch, enjoy the beautiful day, and catch a quick nap. Early morning hike on Inner Basin Trail, San Francisco Peaks. 2009-05-30: Saturday evening, we were sitting on the front porch after our evening walk, enjoying a cup of chai and watching the sun set. There had been rain during the late afternoon, and heavy clouds had descended over the Peaks, hiding the mountain from view. The clouds had lifted in time for our evening ritual, and we noticed there was new snow on the upper tips of the Peaks. As we sipped our tea, we joked “If we were really motivated, we’d get up early, hit the Inner Basin Trail at dawn, and get some good photos before the snow melts off…” 2009-05-31: …so, at 4:00AM we stumbled out of bed, grabbed some coffee, got dressed, grabbed more coffee and rolled out the door around 4:30AM. We drove up the mountain, and hit the trail around 5:15AM. There was a bit of a breeze making the hike rather chilly. Everything was wet and green, and the aspens created a delectable aroma. Past Jack Spring (1.5 miles from the trailhead) we hit the frost line, and the vegetation sparkled (and the air was noticeably chillier). We arrived at the Inner Basin (the point where there’s a shelter and pumphouse, and all the Peaks are visible) around 6:45AM. We’d expected some shade still at that hour, and were delighted to discover the sun was shining right up through the low point in the Peaks (the north-eastern side, where the wall was blown out during an eruption), lighting up the entire Inner Basin for us. We wandered around a bit capturing various shots, then headed back to attend to our day’s activities. Hiking report View all the photos from this hike

If you are looking for a restaurant of great quality where real Venetians go, try Ostaria al Vecio Pozzo in Via Santa Croce, 656. It has one of the best ratings in Trip Advisor. We were in Venice end of May 2010 for 4 nights and on our first night the manager of a shop in Venice recommended Osteria al Vecio Pozzo which was about 5 minutes walk from our hotel. This is a small restaurant which specialises in fish, meat and pizza. The meal we had was absolutely superb. Excellent basic italian dishes and a good wine list. We went there all four nights in our four day trip to Venice. We found the price of our meals here very good for Venice. We were served on all nights by a lovely young waitress who couldn't have done enough for the customers. When we were leaving we got to meet the Chef Alessandro whom we congratulated on the excellent food. www.veciopozzo.it/. The name of this computer, alone, sounds like a #TBT worthy of sharing! This was the Datatron-205 (can't imagine what the previous version looked like) that was detailed to the USGS from NASA Ames Research Center back in 1964. Valued at a mere $287,000, the Datatron was to be used for astrogeological studies. NASA had used it for testing spacecraft, but it was provided to the USGS to refine and detail lunar photos for the astronauts as they approached the Moon so they could better understand the terrain and structure. The Flagstaff Milestone quoted, Wayne Lowry, an electrical engineer for the Burroughs Company (who built the machine), as saying, "A problem that would take four mathematicians one year to do can be solved by this machine in 30 minutes." Fujifilm Superia X-tra 800 Nikon F3 Nikkor AI-S 50mm f1.4 This is the official documentary photographer from Apple. Very very cool guy. He uses Canon 5Dmarkiii and some premium L glasses. I spotted a 24-70 f2.8 and a fast ultra wide. Ironically, that day. Me, as a photo journalist and a photographer, only carried a Nikon F3 with AI-S 50 f1.4 and a roll of Fujifilm X-tra 800. I was amazed by the number of the good shots I've got that day and also the quality of them. Sharp, clear and colours are superb. Bus ticket machine, Viby Torv. What's so special about this, you may ask? Well... it's actually working! Back in 2011 a new citybus network was introduced in Aarhus. Part of that project involved the purchase of several ticket machines, like this one, to be placed at traffical key points in Aarhus. But there was a small problem: the new machines didn't work... something about technical incompatabilities, they said... but they were working on it, and all should soon be solved. Some time passed... the tech guys were still "working on it" and some progress was apparently being made. To prove the point, it was decided to set up the first machine, on Viby Torv (yes, this one), so that the system could undergo the final tests. So Viby got the first machine... hoorah! After a few days of testing, the system crashed completely, and it was back to the drawing board for the techs. Meanwhile, the poor machine just sat there, saying "out of order" Every now and then the media would write about these pesky machines, and ask if they would ever be fixed. And every time the answer would be along the lines of "we hope to have them ready very soon" Well, in february 2014 it finally happened, after a delay of 2½ years, the ticket machine on Viby Torv became operational and soon after the other ones were installed around the city. Lake Wanaka is location at the foot of the Southern Alps of NZ Sth Island with the wilderness of Mt Aspiring National Park nearby. Roys Bay is at the southern end of Lake Wanaka. Rooted firmly into the earth near the shore of Roys Bay is a lone tree. On high tide its base is submerged. How it got there I don't know. Was it a seed dropped by a bird many years ago, maybe. One thing's for sure, it's a very popular tree with photographers, painters and sightseers. A famous land mark to the area. Within a couple hundred feet, the route turned back into a smooth, dirt, two-track road… basically, quite driveable. We hiked it anyway. There was a tree blocking the road about halfway to Lost Lake, but aside from that the route is a well maintained route, with a couple side-roads heading off of it. The road gently ascends to the top of a hill, where Lost Lake is actually a pair of tanks. The upper tank is quite large, and both had water in them. There were a few wildflowers, and butterflies and western tanagers were flitting about. It’s a very pretty area, and quite likely an excellent place for bird watching. Lost Lake is definitely worth a visit, whether hiking or driving. The tanks are surrounded by forest, and we took advantage of the shade to have lunch, enjoy the beautiful day, and catch a quick nap. Road to Lost Lake Tank. 2009-05-07: On the fifth day of our camping trip on the Mogollon Rim we were still looking to beat the heat by staying above the rim. I’d noticed a route marked as a trail on my GPS (the base map on my Garmin Oregon 400T) leading to a spot marked Lost Lake. We headed for trail, turning off of the main road onto a jeep track. The route quickly got rocky, and we assumed it was petering out, so we parked and started hiking. A lone tree stands sentinel over the start of summer. Inner Basin Trail

Early morning hike on Inner Basin Trail, San Francisco Peaks. 2009-05-30: Saturday evening, we were sitting on the front porch after our evening walk, enjoying a cup of chai and watching the sun set. There had been rain during the late afternoon, and heavy clouds had descended over the Peaks, hiding the mountain from view. The clouds had lifted in time for our evening ritual, and we noticed there was new snow on the upper tips of the Peaks. As we sipped our tea, we joked “If we were really motivated, we’d get up early, hit the Inner Basin Trail at dawn, and get some good photos before the snow melts off…” 2009-05-31: …so, at 4:00AM we stumbled out of bed, grabbed some coffee, got dressed, grabbed more coffee and rolled out the door around 4:30AM. We drove up the mountain, and hit the trail around 5:15AM. There was a bit of a breeze making the hike rather chilly. Everything was wet and green, and the aspens created a delectable aroma. Past Jack Spring (1. 5 miles from the trailhead) we hit the frost line, and the vegetation sparkled (and the air was noticeably chillier). We arrived at the Inner Basin (the point where there’s a shelter and pumphouse, and all the Peaks are visible) around 6:45AM. We’d expected some shade still at that hour, and were delighted to discover the sun was shining right up through the low point in the Peaks (the north-eastern side, where the wall was blown out during an eruption), lighting up the entire Inner Basin for us. We wandered around a bit capturing various shots, then headed back to attend to our day’s activities. Hiking report View all the photos from this hike

A Tree Swims in Arizona

Hmmm, did some aerial agent drop this Christmas tree in our yard? Good shot! It landed in the pool! At least someone got to use the pool this year. Okay, actually we put the tree in here. On the advice of 2 different friends, it is suggested a good day's soak in the pool will help the tree last longer in the Arizona dry climate. "Hey! No rough housing in the deep end!".
