Today we have a carefully posed shot with boys sprinkled like raisins in a currant bun and a man, a teacher perhaps, sitting on a tree! In the background is what appears to be an enormous institutional type of building. I will be interested to see if we can identify this one...

....and indeed O Mac was relatively quick off the mark identifying the building as Saint Senan's Psychiatric Hospital, County Wexford. Also known as "Enniscorthy District Lunatic Asylum for the Insane Poor of Mind", it was opened in the 1860s, and there's a suggestion that this image was taken in the first decade(s) of its operation. Closed as a hospital within the last 5 years, viewing more recent photos of the building, one might be forgiven for thinking it had been shut for somewat longer.

Arrival of President Poincare at Le Quesnoy

Arrival of President Raymond Poincare of France (right of centre) in Le Quesnoy. Photograph taken 10 November 1918 by Henry Armytage Sanders.
Inscriptions: Inscribed - Photographer's title on negative -bottom left: H1237.
The President was accompanied by the Prefect of the Department of the North, and the local member of Parliament. The visit marked France symbolically taking posession of the town liberated by foreign troops. It was also the first time that a President of France had visited Le Quesnoy. This visit was to be followed on 18 November by a visit of King George V of Britain.

In 1913 King and Ben Thompson purchased 840 acres of the Miller family farm from James Terrell Miller to form the original land tract for the City of Upper Arlington. James T. Miller is considered the first resident of Upper Arlington and was elected as mayor soon after it was incorporated as a village in March 1918. Born in Columbus on August 14, 1846, Mr. Miller married Miss Esther Everett in 1869. They had eight children: Samuel Huston, Henry, Eliza (Mrs. E. D. Howard), Grace, Nancy, Almeda, Jessie, and Ella. In 1856, his father, Henry Miller, bought the 850 acres that later became the majority of the plat for Upper Arlington, because he felt a move to the country would improve James' health. The family home grew to contain 22 rooms and was one of the first six houses in Columbus outfitted with plumbing. The Miller family actively farmed the land and raised horses and shorthorn cattle. Henry, James, and Samuel Huston also operated a shoe business with stores in Columbus and Pittsburg.

This barrel coral had what looked like a smiley face on it so it really caught my eye. It stands out with the nice light green background. This reef was right off shore in sunny south Florida and it is a favorite diving spot.

Chief architect and designer Imre Steindl, together with many artists and craftsmen of the era, created this unique work of art as a manifestation of the strength and self-belief of Hungarians.

Replica of Thomas Lincoln's log cabin. He was the father of President Abraham Lincoln. In 1893, the original Thomas Lincoln log cabin was disassembled and shipped northward to serve as an exhibit at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. The original cabin was lost after the Exposition, and may have been used as firewood. However, the cabin had been photographed many times, and an exact replica was built from the photographs and from contemporary descriptions. My late grandpa had an ardour for photodocumentation, this pic is from his heritage. I, as heiress of his memories, permit the use of this photo. King Gibson Thompson’s home, located at 1930 Cambridge Boulevard on the corner of Edgemont Road, was completed in 1916. King Thompson, one of the founders and incorporators of Upper Arlington, lived there with his wife, the former Ethel Herrick, and children, Edward Herrick Thompson, Irma Francis Thompson, Frank King Thompson and Victor King Thompson. Ethel Thompson was a member of the Upper Arlington Red Cross Unit, established in 1917, which met weekly to socialize, as well as to sew towels, hospital clothes, and bandages in their contribution to the war effort. The Thompson family was very involved in the social life of their new community. In fact, the very first school was held in the basement of this home from 1917 to 1918 with twelve pupils in the first three grades.

King and his brother, Ben, initiated Upper Arlington’s establishment when they purchased 840 acres of the "most suitable, most convenient and the most beautiful rolling, partly wooded Ohio farmland" from James Terrell Miller in 1913. The land appealed to the Thompsons as a residential site because of its location on high ground, its proximity to both downtown Columbus and The Ohio State University campus, and its position upwind from larger cities. The beautiful land that was once a "well-managed, immaculately kept, working farm" was subdivided into 2500 lots. The King Thompson Company was started in 1914 to sell the new subdivision to the public. In August of 1914, laborers and teams of horses were hired by the Thompson brothers to construct the first street, named Roxbury Road, leading into this pristine new subdivision.

By 1915 six houses were built and early in 1916 both King and Ben Thompson completed construction on their own new homes. The Upper Arlington Company was formed in March 1917, to develop the land and construct streets, sewers and water lines. King Thompson's plan for this new community demanded that: one management oversaw the entire district, each house was located with respect to the location of houses on adjoining lots, and each lot was graded and landscaped in accordance with the scenery of neighboring areas so that consistency between plots was maintained. This theme of continuity and precision in landscaping is still observable in Upper Arlington neighborhoods. On March 20, 1918, the village of Upper Arlington, with 200 residents was incorporated.

King Thompson was born and raised in Georgetown, Ohio with his brother, Ben, and two sisters, Irma and Loula. After graduating from high school in his hometown, Ben moved to Delaware to attend Ohio Wesleyan University and later attended law school at The Ohio State University. While at Ohio State, King recognized the potential of the residential areas north and east of the university and launched his real estate career by developing many neighborhoods in this area. King Thompson had an entrepreneurial spirit and, as a young man, started a drayage business with a wagon and a team of horses. He was the first to organize a train to transport Ohio State fans to Ann Arbor to see the football game.

King was also an avid sportsman who loved to fish, hunt, play tennis and baseball, and pitch horseshoes. He was a part of the temporary committee charged with organizing the first Upper Arlington Golf Club in 1922 and was a member of the Upper Arlington Swimming Pool Association, which organized the 1928 construction of the Devon Road pool.

Ankara Opera Building

The Ankara Opera Building, which hosts performances by the Ankara State Opera and Ballet and Ankara State Theater was designed and built as an exhibition center and only later converted into an opera house. In 1933 the National Economy Community opened an international competition for the building stating that it had to be in modernist style. A proposal by Şevki Balmumcu received first prize and construction went ahead between 1933 and 1934. In 1948 Paul Bonatz converted the building into an opera house and his addition of traditional Turkish architectural details made it more “national.” Balmumcu was not consulted about the building’s renovation, which disappointed and professionally disturbed him for years to come. In the garden of the building there are sculptures of Leyla Gencer, Cüneyt Gencer and Muhsin Ertuğrul.

The Shields Daily News for 18 December 1915 reports:

“SOLDIER CHARGED WITH THEFT AT NORTH SHIELDS.

At North Shields today, Thomas Henry Miller (24), a soldier, of Walsall Street Court, West Bromwich, was brought up on remand, charged with having stolen on the 22nd November, from the North Shields railway station, a brown leather kit bag and contents, valued at £3 19s 6d, the property of Lieut. Traill of the 3rd Batt. Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, stationed at the King Edward Schools. The case was fully gone into yesterday but the sentence was postponed for the purpose of making enquiries about the defendant’s character. An officer gave the defendant a good character and said he had nothing against him. The defendant was bound over for 6 months in the sum of £5.”

These images are taken from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 (TWAM ref. DX1388/1). This set is our selection of the best mugshots taken during the First World War. They have been chosen because of the sharpness and general quality of the images. The album doesn’t record the details of each prisoner’s crimes, just their names and dates of arrest.

In order to discover the stories behind the mugshots, staff from Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums visited North Shields Local Studies Library where they carefully searched through microfilm copies of the ‘Shields Daily News’ looking for newspaper reports of the court cases. The newspaper reports have been transcribed and added below each mugshot.

Combining these two separate records gives us a fascinating insight into life on the Home Front during the First World War. These images document the lives of people of different ages and backgrounds, both civilians and soldiers. Our purpose here is not to judge them but simply to reflect the realities of their time.

Ind Genetic plane was predominantly was a rice-growing region. It had various other cereals too jar, Barbara, mullets and other. As our trade with the Arabic-European corridor increased we got the first input of wheat into our eating habits.The discovery of the new world after the 14th century led to worldwide trade of spices and vegetables. The new world brought us chilli, Potato, Corn, Tomato, and Onion. The Ind-Genetic and the Deccan menu was heavily influenced. There was a wave of changes with new spices and vegetables on our platter.
