Description: The Commissariat Store in Brisbane is Queensland’s second-oldest building, surpassed only by the Old Observatory in Wickham Terrace. Constructed between May 1828 and December 1829 during the regime of Captain Patrick Logan, Commandant of the Moreton Bay penal settlement, the Commissariat Store is of Georgian design with freestone walls. In 1886 a single-storey brick building was added to the south-east wing, with a second storey being completed in 1900, though the entire wing was later demolished. In 1912-1913 a third storey was added to the entire existing structure.

When first completed, the Commissariat Store was contiguous to a wharf and crane for the convenient unloading of docked vessels. After fulfilling this role the building was used to house immigrants, as offices for the Queensland Law Reform Commission and as a repository for Queensland State Archives. Fittingly, the Commissariat Store now serves as the headquarters of the Royal Historical Society of Queensland. South View of the Treasury Building Brisbane ca 1904

Location: Brisbane

Description: The Treasury Building, at the corner of George and Queen Streets, was erected in three stages between 1886 and 1928. In 1883 a design competition for a two-storeyed building was won by Melbourne architects Grainger and D'Ebro. However this design was never used as the Queensland Colonial Architect, John James Clark, argued that the site warranted a four-storeyed complex. Clark's own design, entered in the competition prior to his appointment, was used. When completed in September 1889, the new building was occupied by the Premier, Colonial secretary, Registrar-General, Treasury, Mines, Works, Police and Auditor-General.

Stage two which completed the Elizabeth Street section was commenced almost immediately and was completed by February 1893. This new wing was occupied by the Registrar of Titles, Justice, Works, Public Instruction and the State Savings Bank. Work on the third state commenced in 1922 and officially opened in 1928, providing expanded accommodation for the existing tenants. The building is now home to an international casino and restaurants.

Queensland materials used in the construction include brown freestone from Helidon (outer walls) and freestone from Yangan near Warwick (colonnade walls). The building is bordered by George Street, Stephens Lane, William Street and Queens Gardens. Queens Gardens are located in front of the building.
