1930 Cambridge Boulevard, Home of King Thompson, 1918

King Gibson Thompsonâ€™s home, located at 1930 Cambridge Boulevard on the corner of Edgemont Road, was completed in 1916. King Thompson, one of the founders and incorporators of Upper Arlington, lived there with his wife, the former Ethel Herrick, and children, Edward Herrick Thompson, Irma Francis Thompson, Frank King Thompson and Victor King Thompson. Ethel Thompson was a member of the Upper Arlington Red Cross Unit, established in 1917, which met weekly to socialize, as well as to sew towels, hospital clothes, and bandages in their contribution to the war effort. The Thompson family was very involved in the social life of their new community. In fact, the very first school was held in the basement of this home from 1917 to 1918 with twelve pupils in the first three grades.

King and his brother, Ben, initiated Upper Arlingtonâ€™s establishment when they purchased 840 acres of the "most suitable, most convenient and the most beautiful rolling, partly wooded Ohio farmland" from James Terrell Miller in 1913. The land appealed to the Thompsons as a residential site because of its location on high ground, its proximity to both downtown Columbus and The Ohio State University campus, and its position upwind from larger cities. The beautiful land that was once a "well-managed, immaculately kept, working farm" was subdivided into 2500 lots. The King Thompson Company was started in 1914 to sell the new subdivision to the public. In August of 1914, laborers and teams of horses were hired by the Thompson brothers to construct the first street, named Roxbury Road, leading into this pristine new subdivision.

By 1915 six houses were built and early in 1916 both King and Ben Thompson completed construction on their own new homes. The Upper Arlington Company was formed in March 1917, to develop the land and construct streets, sewers and water lines. King Thompson's plan for this new community demanded that: one management oversaw the entire district, each house was located with respect to the location of houses on adjoining lots, and each lot was graded and landscaped in accordance with the scenery of neighboring areas so that consistency between plots was maintained. This theme of continuity and precision in landscaping is still observable in Upper Arlington neighborhoods. On March 20, 1918, the village of Upper Arlington, with 200 residents was incorporated.

King Thompson was born and raised in Georgetown, Ohio with his brother, Ben, and two sisters, Irma and Loula. After graduating from high school in his hometown, Ben moved to Delaware to attend Ohio Wesleyan University and later attended law school at The Ohio State University. While at Ohio State, King recognized the potential of the residential areas north and east of the university and launched his real estate career by developing many neighborhoods in this area. King Thompson had an entrepreneurial spirit and, as a young man, started a drayage business with a wagon and a team of horses. He was the first to organize a train to transport Ohio State fans to Ann Arbor to see the football game.

King was also an avid sportsman who loved to fish, hunt, play tennis and baseball, and pitch horseshoes. He was a part of the temporary committee charged with organizing the first Upper Arlington Golf Club in 1922 and was a member of the Upper Arlington Swimming Pool Association, which organized the 1928 construction of the Devon Road pool.

James Terrell Miller, 1918

In 1913 King and Ben Thompson purchased 840 acres of the Miller family farm from James Terrell Miller to form the original land tract for the City of Upper Arlington. James T. Miller is considered the first resident of Upper Arlington and was elected as mayor soon after it was incorporated as a village in March 1918. Born in Columbus on August 14, 1846, Mr. Miller married Miss Esther Everett in 1869. They had eight children: Samuel Huston, Henry, Eliza (Mrs. E. D. Howard), Grace, Nancy, Almeda, Jessie, and Ella. In 1856, his father, Henry Miller, bought the 850 acres that later became the majority of the plat for Upper Arlington, because he felt a move to the country would improve James' health. The family home grew to contain 22 rooms and was one of the first six houses in Columbus outfitted with plumbing. The Miller family actively farmed the land and raised horses and shorthorn cattle. Henry, James, and Samuel Huston also operated a shoe business with stores in Columbus and Pittsburg.

Frank Bourke, brass founder, arrested for breaking and entering and stealing food

A newspaper report of the case has been found although it contains two different spellings of the prisoner's name, making it unclear which is the right one. The Shields Daily News for 15 August 1907 reports:

"BREAKING INTO A CABIN ON THE LONG SANDS.

At North Shields Police Court today, Michael Macauley (19), labourer, Sunderland, and Francis Burke (21), brass founder, belonging to Cornwall, were charged with breaking and entering a stall on the Long Sands and stealing a quantity of biscuits and toffee and two glasses, the property of Mr A. Stephenson.

PC King stated that on Thursday last at 7am, he was examining the cabins on the sands. There was an opening in the deals of Mr Stephenson's cabin and Burke was looking out of it. He told witness that he was watching the bathers. Burke gave his address and witness was satisfied that it was correct and allowed him to come out of the cabin, and saw Macauley in a corner with two boxes of biscuits, a bottle of toffee and two bottles of lemonade with the stoppers drawn. The window of theinner cabin, in which the goods were stocked, was broken. Macauley said "I was only going to finish the biscuits." He took him into custody and later arrested Bourke, who in reply to the charge said "That is quite right."

Mr G.R. Duncan, who defended Burke, said he was a lad who had hitherto borne an excellent character, but had fallen out of employment, and getting into Macauley's company, he yielded to temptation at a time when he was very hungry. The Chief Constable has kindly promised to assist him to go to sea. Burke was bound over in the sum of Â£5 for six months and Macauley was remanded for a day to enable the police to make further enquiries concerning him."

Federal Building, 1858-present

In 1898 the building was dramatically transformed into an entirely â€˜newâ€™ office building. Now five bays wide it was topped with elaborate side towers It later became the site of the Park Business College. The next renovation added two stories of brick so that the entire building is now a hodge podge of styles.

Ankara Opera Building

The Ankara Opera Building, which hosts performances by the Ankara State Opera and Ballet and Ankara State Theater was designed and built as an exhibition center and only later converted into an opera house. In 1933 the National Economy Community opened an international competition for the building stating that it had to be in modernist style. A proposal by Åževki Balmumcu received first prize and construction went ahead between 1933 and 1934. In 1948 Paul Bonatz converted the building into an opera house and his addition of traditional Turkish architectural details made it more â€œnational.â€ Balmumcu was not consulted about the buildingâ€™s renovation, which disappointed and professionally disturbed him for years to come. In the garden of the building there are sculptures of Leyla Gencer, CÃ¼neyt Gencer and Muhsin ErtuÄŸrul.

Description: The Commissariat Store in Brisbane is Queenslandâ€™s second-oldest building, surpassed only by the Old Observatory in Wickham Terrace. Constructed between May 1828 and December 1829 during the regime of Captain Patrick Logan, Commandant of the Moreton Bay penal settlement, the Commissariat Store is of Georgian design with freestone walls. In 1886 a single-storey brick building was added to the south-east wing, with a second storey being completed in 1900, though the entire wing was later demolished. In 1912-1913 a third storey was added to the entire existing structure.

When first completed, the Commissariat Store was contiguous to a wharf and crane for the convenient unloading of docked vessels. After fulfilling this role the building was used to house immigrants, as offices for the Queensland Law Reform Commission and as a repository for Queensland State Archives. Fittingly, the Commissariat Store now serves as the headquarters of the Royal Historical Society of Queensland. Memorial cross in Island Stroma, Caithness, Scotland, U.K Stroma was once a populous island in the Pentland Firth, finally deserted in 1962 now it's only inhabitants are a herd of sheep and various other wildlife. The people of Stroma were very close-knit and noted on several occasions for their striking manner and self-sufficiency. "From their political situation, and the simplicity, sobriety and industry, natural to them, there are perhaps few islanders on earth happier than those of Stroma." Most people lived in single-storey houses which had two main rooms, called the 'but' and 'ben'. In these houses, there was usually a small bedroom (called the 'closet') and a porch also. The 'but' was the living room where all everyday family life took place; the 'ben' however was only used on special occasions, like when visitors came. Each room had box-beds, these were often closed in by folding doors or curtains. Wooden boards were covered with a layer of straw and a chaff filled mattress, both were renewed every year. The pillows were stuffed with the feathers of the croft chickens which were killed, plucked then eaten (little went to waste), blankets made of sheep's fleece were made at the mill; together this made a very cosy bed. The 'but' held a stove and oven, along with a larder and crockery dresser. The stove and oven were the main means of heating in the croft house, all. DESCRIPTION
Postcard of the Hale Building, formerly used as an Administration Building, Keene State College located at the corner of Main and Winchester Streets in Keene New Hampshire. It was originally built in 1860 for Ex-Governor Samuel Dinsmoor and was later the home of Governor Samuel W. Hale. In 1909 it was presented to the state by the City of Keene when the Normal School was established.
