A gloss (ḥāshiyah) by Kemalpaşazade (d. 940 AH / 1533 CE) on the commentary on the Koran (Qur’an) composed by ʿAbd Allāh al-Bayḍawī (d. ca. 685 AH / 1286 CE) and entitled Anwār al-tanzīl. Transcribed in 966 AH / 1558 CE, this elegant copy was made from the author's holograph by ʿUthmān ibn Manṣūr. This is the decorated incipit page with a rectangular headpiece carrying the doxological formula (basmalah) written in white tawqīʿ script on gold background. An illuminated large size copy of the Koran (Qur'an) produced in the 11th century AH / 17th CE in Iran. Apart from using a number of scripts, such as naskh, muḥaqqaq and tawqīʿ, this codex features six pairs of decorated pages, two illuminated headpieces, as well as illuminated chapter headings, cloud-bands, and marginal decoration. The black morocco binding has a central piece in the form of a diamond with pendants on four sides. The inner covers, having a traditional dentelle decoration, features text from the "the verse of the throne" (āyat al-kursī), which is inscribed in the outer frame. This is a decorated incipit page with illuminated headpiece introducing chapter 18, Sūrat al-kahf. Corvey Gospel fragment, Incipit Luke's Gospel, Walters Art Museum Ms. W.751, fol. 1v

This manuscript consists of four folios from a Gospel Book that was likely made at the monastery of Corvey in Western Germany during the last quarter of the tenth century. Dating to the reign of Otto I, these pages offer a magnificent example of early Ottonian manuscript illumination. The heavily ornamented pages, which introduce the Gospels of Luke and John, shine with gold and jewel-like colors against dyed purple grounds. These pages combine monumental classicizing square capitals on purple grounds with rich and complex interlace. This fragment contains the opening pages of Luke (fols. 93-94) and John (fols. 137-138) that were originally part of Ms. 10 from the Bibliotheque Municipale in Rheims, a Gospel Book originally owned by the Chapter Library of the Cathedral of Rheims until it was confiscated, along with the rest of the cathedral's manuscripts, during the French Revolution. Related manuscripts include Pierpont Morgan Library Ms. M. 755 and New York Public Library Ms. 1. Five poems (quintet), Incipit page with illuminated headpiece, Walters Manuscript W.666, fol. 22b

This is an illuminated and illustrated copy of the Ḫamse (quintet) of the Ottoman Turkish poet and scholar ʿAṭāʾullāh bin Yaḥyá ʿAṭāʾī (d. 1044 AH / 1634 CE). Although different in content, this work takes its inspiration from the famous Persian Khamsah of Niẓāmī Ganjavī (d. 605 AH / 1209 CE) and the Khamsah of Amīr Khusraw Dihlavī (d. 725 AH / 1325 CE). This Ottoman copy of ʿAṭāʾī's work ends with a portion of his Dīvān (fols. 142b-151b) instead of the fifth poem (mesnevi), Ḥilyet ül-efkār. The text, written in nastaʿlīq script, was copied by Ḫeyrullah Ḫeyrī Çāvuşzade in 1133 AH / 1721 CE. There are thirty-eight illustrations, and illuminated incipits introduce the different poems (fols. 1b, 22b, 63b, 107b, and 142b). The brown leather binding is original to the manuscript. It was written in black nasta‘līq script with chapter/section headings in gold ink by Zayn al-‘Ābidīn ‘Abd al-Raḥmān al-Jāmī in 918 AH / 1512 CE in Safavid Iran. The manuscript opens with an illuminated medallion (fol. 1a), followed by a double-page illustrated frontispiece (fols. 1b-2a). The text begins with an incipit page with illuminated headpiece (fol. 2b). There are three additional illustrations (fols. 24a, 49b, and 87a). This is a copy of the well-known poem (mas̱navī) Subḥat al-abrār ('The Rosary of the Righteous') by Nūr al-Dīn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Aḥmad Jāmī (d. 898 AH / 1492 CE). Penned in nastaʿlīq script by Ḥaydar al-Ḥusaynī in 965 AH / 1557-8 CE, the codex opens with an illuminated double-page inscribed with the title and author's name. The text area of later pages are framed by decorated borders and gold-sprinkled margins. The binding is contemporary with the textblock. Five poems (quintet), Incipit page with illuminated headpiece, Walters Manuscript W.666, fol. 1b

This is an illuminated and illustrated copy of the Ḫamse (quintet) of the Ottoman Turkish poet and scholar ʿAṭāʾullāh bin Yaḥyá ʿAṭāʾī (d. 1044 AH / 1634 CE). Although different in content, this work takes its inspiration from the famous Persian Khamsah of Niẓāmī Ganjavī (d. 605 AH / 1209 CE) and the Khamsah of Amīr Khusraw Dihlavī (d. 725 AH / 1325 CE). This Ottoman copy of ʿAṭāʾī's work ends with a portion of his Dīvān (fols. 142b-151b) instead of the fifth poem (mesnevi), Ḥilyet ül-efkār. The text, written in nastaʿlīq script, was copied by Ḫeyrullah Ḫeyrī Çāvuşzade in 1133 AH / 1721 CE. There are thirty-eight illustrations, and illuminated incipits introduce the different poems (fols. 1b, 22b, 63b, 107b, and 142b). The brown leather binding is original to the manuscript. The text was copied by a certain Yādkār the Calligrapher (al-Kātib) in 935 AH / 1529 CE, most probably in Safavid Iran. An illuminated double-page composition opens the manuscript and each poem is initiated with a decorative headpiece. The miniatures appear to have been repainted at some point in the manuscript’s history. Their date and provenance are open to question. The textblock is bound in late Zand lacquer covers with scenes depicting Bahrām Gūr hunting and Khusraw watching Shīrīn bathing.
