This mid-fifteenth century illuminated Book of Hours is written entirely in Dutch on fine vellum, and is remarkable for its eighteen grisaille miniatures. The technique, wherein the figures are modeled primarily in a gray wash, became a favorite in the Netherlands, and the hand behind the paintings in this manuscript has been identified with a group of artists known as the "Masters of the Delft Grisailles." This manuscript has been grouped with more than a dozen related works, including New York PML M. 349, London, Victoria and Albert Geo. Reid Ms. 32, Leiden B.P.L. 224, Brussels, BR 21696, Antwerp, Plantein Moretus Ms. 49, and the Hague K.B. Ms. 74 G 35. The manuscript is comprised of 152 folios and is almost completely intact, lacking only two miniatures, and retains its original brown leather binding decorated with mythological beasts and a now illegible inscription. The calendar is for the use of Utrecht, which helps localize its original ownership, as might a mostly erased ownership inscription that has been partially recovered by Marrow. This Psalter-Hours was made for a Franciscan community in Cologne, Germany, in the late thirteenth century. Abdirizaq Mohamed Abdi Abdulle, a driver with the Mogadishu Taxi Company drives through the streets of the Somali capital Mogadishu, 01 September 2013. Operating since the end of May of this year in the city's dusty and once again bustling streets and thoroughfares, the MTC's distinctive yellow and purple cars offer customers taxi fares around Mogadishu at competitive rates and in the first 3 months of operations, the company has increased it's fleet of vehicles from an initial 25 to over 100. The company, according to Abdirizaq, also enables employment opportunities for Somalia's youth following two decades of conflict in the Horn of Africa nation that shattered a generation. Now, thanks to the relative peace that has followed the departure of the Al-Qaeda-affiliated extremist group Al Shabaab from the city; an internationally recognised government for the first time in years and thousands of Diaspora Somalis returning home to invest in and rebuild their country, the MTC is one of many new companies establishing itself in the new Mogadishu and offering services that were hitherto impossible to provide. Contraintes de supports, formats, matériaux, procédés : Lignes parallèles au pinceau (le même pinceau pour toute la série – je l'ai gardé), la souplesse étant dans la quantité d'eau associée à la gouache noire, la vitesse d’exécution pour une ligne (le pinceau ne décollait la feuille qu'après l'avoir traversé de long en large ; le rythme, les saccades, les tremblements donnaient du jeu aux contraintes initiales) et le temps de séchage entre deux lignes parallèles juxtaposées. J'ai ensuite complété ce dispositif en ajoutant des empreintes façon monotype Le paysage, dans sa plus simple expression, est un jeu d'horizontales – comme le portrait est l'expression de la verticalité (le paysage et la ligne courbe seraient plutôt de l'ordre du féminin alors que le masculin serait dans le portrait et la ligne droite) Nous retrouvons le thème des « barreaux », que j'exploiterai vraiment en 2007 parce qu'il était devenu vital que je digère ma mise en examen... Barreaux déjà présents précédemment dans mon travail sur la « feuille » puis dans mes « rollerballs », enfin dans mes vidéos. Ces traits parallèles m'intéressent d'abord pour leur coté archaïque, de la naissance de l'écriture (décompte de bœufs) jusqu'aux graffitis sur les murs des prisons pour marquer le décompte des jours (autant de barreaux barrés en fin de semaine – c'est un aspect sur lequel je me suis penché dans la série des « marques » que j'ai amorcé -comme les « barreaux »- lors de ma mise en examen en 2006). M'intéresse aussi la multiplicité des interprétations possibles et leur réversibilité suivant le sens exposé, la forêt de bouleaux quand le support est exposé à la verticale devient une « marine » à l'horizontale. Ce travail, tout comme les autres, fait la part belle à ma grande névrose qui consiste à vouloir trouver le maximum dans le minimum, mais que je définis aussi comme une recherche de profondeur plutôt que de superficie. Also interests me the multiplicity of the possible interpretations and their reversibility following the displayed sense, the forest of birches when the support is upright exposed becomes a "seascape" in the horizontal. This work, quite as the others, gives a good place to my big neurosis which consists in wanting to find the maximum in the minimum, but that I also define as a deep research rather that of surface. A last precision: the photo paper gives a silvery shine of the most beautiful effect which is not visible on the scanned picture. (Sorry, it's a « Reverso » translation). Corvey Gospel fragment, Initial Page Luke's Gospel, Walters Art Museum Ms. W.751, fol. 2r

This manuscript consists of four folios from a Gospel Book that was likely made at the monastery of Corvey in Western Germany during the last quarter of the tenth century. Dating to the reign of Otto I, these pages offer a magnificent example of early Ottonian manuscript illumination. The heavily ornamented pages, which introduce the Gospels of Luke and John, shine with gold and jewel-like colors against dyed purple grounds. These pages combine monumental classicizing square capitals on purple grounds with rich and complex interlace. This fragment contains the opening pages of Luke (fols. 93-94) and John (fols. 137-138) that were originally part of Ms. 10 from the Bibliotheque Municipale in Rheims, a Gospel Book originally owned by the Chapter Library of the Cathedral of Rheims until it was confiscated, along with the rest of the cathedral's manuscripts, during the French Revolution. Related manuscripts include Pierpont Morgan Library Ms. M. 755 and New York Public Library Ms. 1.
