A hot spring discharges 77°C (~171°F) water into Hot Springs Creek, Akutan Island, Alaska, Akutan Volcano (photo). Numerous industry-led geophysical studies and test drilling in the past few years have proven the existence of a geothermal resource. USGS field studies completed in 2012 suggest that the available geothermal resource may be even larger than previously recognized. The current heat output of the hot spring system is estimated at 29 megawatts – nearly ten times higher than measured in the early 1980s. This large increase may reflect the volcanic and seismic events of the 1990s, and if so, it cannot be considered a short-term anomaly. Modern geothermal plants could use this heat to generate several MW of electricity. One MW of electric power would supply the needs of about 750 homes. Frankton is located on the edge of a larger area referred to as the Frankton Flats, which is the area of land approximately bounded by Lake Wakatipu, the Kawarau and Shotover Rivers, and State Highway 6 to towards Cromwell. The Frankton Flats is located in the Wakatipu Basin and enjoys longer sunshine hours, particularly in winter, than the majority of land in central Queenstown, which is predominantly south facing. Lost Lake Tank (upper, larger tank). 2009-05-07: On the fifth day of our camping trip on the Mogollon Rim we were still looking to beat the heat by staying above the rim. I’d noticed a route marked as a trail on my GPS (the base map on my Garmin Oregon 400T) leading to a spot marked Lost Lake. We headed for trail, turning off of the main road onto a jeep track. The route quickly got rocky, and we assumed it was petering out, so we parked and started hiking. Within a couple hundred feet, the route turned back into a smooth, dirt, two-track road… basically, quite driveable. We hiked it anyway. There was a tree blocking the road about halfway to Lost Lake, but aside from that the route is a well maintained route, with a couple side-roads heading off of it. The road gently ascends to the top of a hill, where Lost Lake is actually a pair of tanks. The upper tank is quite large, and both had water in them. There were a few wildflowers, and butterflies and western tanagers were flitting about. It’s a very pretty area, and quite likely an excellent place for bird watching. Lost Lake is definitely worth a visit, whether hiking or driving. The tanks are surrounded by forest, and we took advantage of the shade to have lunch, enjoy the beautiful day, and catch a quick nap. A lovely green plate full of fiber and vitamins for the old bun. :) He's been neglecting his pellets lately and has been picky about hay, so he is getting larger portions of greens than usual. It probably dates to the late fifth century AH / eleventh CE or early sixth century AH / twelfth CE. The text is written in the New Abbasid (broken cursive) style in black ink and is vocalized with red dots and blue circles, the latter for sukūn. Single verses are separated by illuminated rosettes, and groups of five verses are indicated by the letter hāʾ in the form of a teardrop in the margins. Marginal medallions are also used for larger verse groups. The black leather binding is modern. Mid-spring blooming rhododendrons make their flower buds in July to September, but will not open until the following year. Many customers ask "Why didn't my rhododendron bloom? They had flower buds!" If you know what the difference between a flower bud and a leaf bud, you will not be surprised come spring as you will be able to recognize which plants have made flower buds the year before they bloom. Fatsia japonica Flower.

Fatsia japonica is the most distinctive of all evergreens with large palmate leaves. The lobed leaves can reach 16 inches across and provide contrast in the shade garden. It can be grown in mass plantings on larger sites or as a specimen in smaller gardens. Grow it with ferns for contrast and it is excellent when mixed with large plantings of Rhododendrons to relieve the monotony of dark, medium evergreen foliage. Drumstick-like flowers are otherworldly in appearance but add to the distinctiveness of this shrub. Plant with the usual woodland perennials like hellebores, hostas, solomn's seal and the like. Fur seals were hunted by both Maori and Europeans and were close to extinction by the mid-1800s. After protection in the 1890s, the population has recovered well and is likely to be in excess of 50 000 and increasing as they continue to spread north. Fur seals are a grey to dark brown colour with adult males much larger (up to 2.5m, 180kg) than females (up to 1.5m, 70kg). Fur seals in New Zealand prefer rocky shores but as with all eared seals are able to move quite quickly on land. At sea they mainly use the front flippers and will often porpoise out of the water when moving quickly. They feed on squid, octopus and a variety of fish. Mother and Daughter Statues.

Gracing the waterfront of downtown San Francisco, this amazing display looks to be depicting a mother and daughter, with the much larger mother pouring something from her hand into the outstretched hand of her little girl. The statues have been constructed of metal, with both constructs composed of mostly empty air. While the family portrait is beautiful, the starkness of the metal and the cruelly formed hands give the display an almost dark and eerie look, depending on how you want to interpret the scene!. Within the upper, or adaxial, epidermis, large white bulliform cells shrink, allowing the leaf to roll during drought. Stomata are present on both surfaces with guard cells perched above small round substomatal chambers. As with most monocots the mesophyll is unspecialized, being composed of compactly arranged somewhat round chlorenchyma cells. Numerous small and occasionally large vascular bundles are arranged in parallel series along the length of the leaf. The vascular bundles are collateral and closed with xylem of vessels and tracheids towards the adaxial surface and phloem of sieve tubes and companion cells towards the abaxial surface. Cambium is not present. Within each bundle a xylem of two oval metaxylem and a single large protoxylem cavity can be seen. Each vascular bundle is wraped by a bundle sheath of thin walled parenchyma cells. Springtime at Schultz Tank

Following a winter of heavy snows, Schultz Tank was full to the point of overflowing in the spring of 2017. This is the view of the smaller, upper tank. Schultz Tank is a man-made pond nestled between the San Francisco Peaks and Dry Lake Hills at Schultz Pass. Two earthen dams create a pair of reservoirs along the drainage, creating a small upper tank and larger lower tank. The tank is a haven for wildlife. A few ducks will live on the pond through the summer months. Small birds can usually be seen cavorting over the pond chasing flying insects. On quiet days, elk and deer may appear in the twilight hours. To ensure wildlife have access to water, state law prohibits camping within a quarter mile of a wildlife tank.
