Over the years these calcium laden waters have laid down huge deposits of a type of limestone called travertine. That rock-like substance encases whatever happens to fall into the streambed, forming the fossils for which the area is named. Fossil Creek is one of two "Wild and Scenic" rivers in Arizona. This special designation was achieved when the Irving power plant was decommissioned, and removal of flume and dam on the creek allowed this magnificent creek to once again flow freely through Arizona's arid landscape. Most people come to Fossil Creek to sunbathe, wade, hike and birdwatch. It's also a great place to take photographs. The lushness of the riparian area strikes a sharp contrast to the brittle desert that surrounds it. This is an illustrated copy of four of the five poems that comprise the Khamsah of Niẓāmī Ganjavī (d.605 AH / 1209 CE). It does not include Laylá va Majnūn. The text was copied by a certain Yādkār the Calligrapher (al-Kātib) in 935 AH / 1529 CE, most probably in Safavid Iran. An illuminated double-page composition opens the manuscript and each poem is initiated with a decorative headpiece. The miniatures appear to have been repainted at some point in the manuscript’s history. Their date and provenance are open to question. The textblock is bound in late Zand lacquer covers with scenes depicting Bahrām Gūr hunting and Khusraw watching Shīrīn bathing. Five poems (quintet), Ottoman fleet, Walters Manuscript W.666, fol. 5a

This is an illuminated and illustrated copy of the Ḫamse (quintet) of the Ottoman Turkish poet and scholar ʿAṭāʾullāh bin Yaḥyá ʿAṭāʾī (d. 1044 AH / 1634 CE). Although different in content, this work takes its inspiration from the famous Persian Khamsah of Niẓāmī Ganjavī (d. 605 AH / 1209 CE) and the Khamsah of Amīr Khusraw Dihlavī (d. 725 AH / 1325 CE). This Ottoman copy of ʿAṭāʾī's work ends with a portion of his Dīvān (fols. 142b-151b) instead of the fifth poem (mesnevi), Ḥilyet ül-efkār. The text, written in nastaʿlīq script, was copied by Ḫeyrullah Ḫeyrī Çāvuşzade in 1133 AH / 1721 CE. Let the Sun Shine in

Although my doctor tells me to get less sun exposure, I feel as if I can never get enough sun light. In most of the buildings I have work in, it seems that most people keep their windows covered. Blinds are closed entirely. Often, no sun light makes it inside. The interior lights are turned on all day. I say, let the sun shine in! For me there is no more pleasant light than daylight. It is a beautiful crisp and cheerful white. Artificial light, especially incandescent has a depressing yellow tinge that makes everything look dingy. Oddly, for me, flourescent, halogen and LED lighting is coloured to make it mimic that depressing (for me) incandescent yellow colour. My preference is like the window on the right. Bring in the sun! Brighten everything up. Banish that yellow artificial light to the basement! 12 Yates St. in downtown St. Catharines, Ontario. Oak Hill is the former residence of William Hamilton Merritt.
