All the Way Home

The commute home after all long week in the office is a time to wind down and transition into the calmness of home life. However, this transition can be challenging depending on the nature of the commute. In large urban areas, the commute can be more stressful than the work day. I have commuted in major urban areas with clogged multilane freeways and have commuted in rural areas with quiet roads. I much prefer the latter. I fantasize about a commute that involves no traffic (of the motorized kind) at all. I imagine a tree lined path with no cars, trucks or even buildings. The only other commuters I would see would be four legged or winged. This trail on the east side of Short Hills Provincial Park in Thorold, Ontario connects the dead ends of Wiley Road and Eller Road. It appear as if this was once part of one or the other of these two roads. Today, it is a hiking, cycling and equestrian trail. An idea route for a bucolic commute without traffic. Secret Canyon Trail

Secret Canyon Trail **Sedona Loop Hike - Secret Canyon, David Miller, Bear Sign, and Dry Creek Trails 2009-03-18: With the increasingly long days, we decided to hike the Secret Canyon, Dave Miller, Bear Sign, and Dry Creek loop for our midweek hike. The entire loop is approximately 6.5 miles long. The loop starts at Secret Canyon trailhead, following the first two miles of the trail through wide open canyon with fantasic redrock views. David Miller Trail comes in from the left right before Secret Canyon Trail turns to go deep into Secret Canyon. David Miller serves as a joiner trail between Secret Canyon and Bear Sign Trails. The trail is one mile long, with a moderately strenuous (but thankfully short, quarter mile) climb up to a pass. The views from the trail are absolutely fantastic, however the pass itself is fairly heavily treed, so be the best views are from the trail before reaching the pass. The trail on the Bear Sign Canyon side of the pass is steeper and the canyon is heavily forested. The descent from the pass to the canyon floor is approximately 200 vertical feet. Turning right on Bear Sign Trail leads 2.25 miles through the heavily forested, steep, narrow canyon. The canyon is very pretty, and a great hike for escaping the heat on warmer days. The trail drops down into the wash nears the end, joining up at Dry Creek Trail where two drainages meet. Veering left on Dry Creek Trail, the trail offers some nice canyon views before arriving at the Dry Creek/Vultee’s Arch trailhead after 0.75 mile. Secret Canyon trailhead is a mile hike down the dirt road from the Dry Creek/Vultee’s Arch trailhead. The Flume Trail starts at the old Irving Power Plant site. The five mile long trail follows the old flume access road along the canyon wall above Fossil Creek, providing beautiful, wide-open views of the wilderness. There is an easy low-water crossing across flat, solid rock at the trailhead on Forest Road 708. From the trailhead, the trail heads up towards the cliff wall where informational signs can be found. The steep hillside offers little shade to the gently rolling trail. The trail ends at the Old Fossil Springs Dam, where it meets up with Fossil Springs Trail.

"The Citroën 2CV (French: "deux chevaux" i.e. "deux chevaux-vapeur" (lit. 'steam horses'), "two tax horsepower") was an economy car produced by the French car manufacturer Citroën between 1948 and 1990. It was technologically advanced and innovative, but with uncompromisingly utilitarian unconventional looks, and deceptively simple Bauhaus and Junkers early all metal aircraft inspired bodywork (corrugated for added strength without added weight), that belied the sheer quality of its underlying engineering. It was designed to motorise the large number of small-holder farmers in 1930s France, who were still using horses and carts. It is considered one of Citroën's most iconic cars. In 1953 Autocar in a technical review of the car wrote of "the extraordinary ingenuity of this design, which is undoubtedly the most original since the Model T Ford". It was described by Car Magazine journalist and author L. J. K. Setright as "the most intelligent application of minimalism ever to succeed as a car". It was designed for low cost, simplicity of use and maintenance, versatility, reliability, low fuel consumption and off-road driving. For this it had a light, easily serviceable engine, extremely soft long travel suspension (with height adjustment by lengthening/shortening of tie rods) high ground clearance, and for oversized loads a car-wide canvas sunroof, which (until 1955) also covered the boot. During a production run of 42 years between 1948 and 1990, 3,872,583 2CVs were produced, plus 1,246,306 Fourgonnettes (small 2CV delivery vans), as well as spawning mechanically identical vehicles including the Ami: 1,840,396; the Dyane: 1,444,583; the Acadiane: 253,393; and the Mehari: 144,953, a grand total of 8,756,688, of which there are still 3,382 on the road in the UK as of January 2013. From 1988 onwards, production took place in Portugal (Mangualde) rather than in France. This arrangement lasted for two years until 2CV production halted. Portuguese built cars, especially those from when production was winding down, have a reputation in the UK for being much less well made and more prone to corrosion than those made in France. Achiemore is situated to the north of Smigel Burn on the right bank of the Halladale River just beyond where the Allt an Tigh-choinneirnh flows and Upper Bighouse.
