Banks Peninsular.NZ

Banks Peninsula is situated in about the middle of the east coast of the South Island on the margin of the Canterbury Plains. It is approximately 450 sq. miles in area and its highest point is Herbert Peak, 3,014 ft. It comprises two extinct volcanoes which were active less than half a million years ago. Their craters have subsequently been enlarged to many times their original size by stream erosion; they were then invaded by the sea during the postglacial world-wide rise in sea level beginning about 15,000 years ago. They now form the harbours of Lyttelton and Akaroa. Originally Banks Peninsula was an island, but it became tied to the Canterbury Plains at some late stage in geological history when the growing alluvial plain reached its base. The 104 year old steam tug Lyttelton is just about the only bit of historic Lyttelton intact after the earth quake. But it needs a bit of help to keep going in its second century. The Tug Lyttelton Preservation Society is looking for volunteers to keep the tug steaming. The magic of steam has been with the Port since the 19th century which has seen the Lyttelton village grow, briefly stumble with an earthquake, and now plan for a bright new future. That the steam tug TSST LYTTELTON has survived the passing of the steam era, with the advent of modern diesel powered vessels, is no coincidence. It has survived because she is, has been and always will be, one of Port Lyttelton’s icons. An icon that remains proud and a talisman to show that Lyttelton will survive whatever may come. 28/09/2015. Salvage crews will meet for two hours to decide how they will recover the stranded MV Tuhoe on Tuesday. The 96-year-old ship was returning to its berth in the Kaiapoi River, after receiving more than $200,000 worth of repairs in Lyttelton, when it ran aground on a sandbar at the Waimakariri River mouth about 4pm Sunday. MV Tuhoe Kaiapoi Riverton Trust chairman Philip Redmond said a surveyor had examined the ship and deemed the risk too great to try and save it. Regional harbourmaster Jim Dilley said the ship's owners, insurance company, contractors and a salvage crew would meet with him at 8am on Tuesday to discuss how they could recover the damaged vessel. They would have a detailed plan by 10am. Dilley, who did not know how the ship fared overnight, said on Monday the waves were moving the boat's stern, causing a twisting effect with the potential to break it in half. 28/09/2015.
