Biography: Rosa Parks's deliberate decision to test the practice of Jim Crow was the catalyst that triggered the 1955 bus boycott in Montgomery, Ala. The daughter of James and Leona Edwards McCauley, she grew up in Pine Level, Ala., and was sent away to a private girls' school in Montgomery at the age of 11. She later met Raymond Parks, a serious young barber with whom she spent many hours discussing the burden and injustice of the racial situation; they married in 1932. Mr. Parks was a member of the National Committee to Save the Scottsboro Boys, and she soon joined him in becoming active in the Montgomery chapter of the NAACP, serving as secretary and youth adviser. On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat for a white passenger on a Montgomery bus. Her arrest and the subsequent development of a 381-day bus boycott by tens of thousands heralded a new phase in the civil rights movement. The Black community formed the Montgomery Improvement Association, electing as president Martin Luther King, Jr.; Mrs. Parks served for a time on its board of directors. Fired from her job as an assistant tailor in a department store, she stayed in Montgomery until the boycott forced an end to all discriminatory practices on the bus lines. In 1957 she and her husband moved to Detroit, Mich., where in 1965 she took a part-time job as receptionist and administrative aide in the office of Congressman John Conyers. She was the first woman in 1980 to receive the Martin Luther King, Jr., Nonviolent Peace Prize. There is a National Committee for the Rosa L. Parks Shrine, organized to commemorate her life by the establishment of a home and library.

' ... When that troupe sailed to New Zealand from Australia in March 1937 “a new member of the company went with them”, reported the Adelaide newspaper, The Mail.

“He is, without a doubt, the most popular member of the company. And his name is Aspa. He is only a tiny dog, but he is the inseparable pal of Alexis Frank and Betty Souvorova, who picked him up starving on the streets of King’s Cross.

“As he stepped from a shop one night Mr Frank stepped on a dog, which limped off licking a damaged paw. Miss Souvorova consoled the dog with a piece of chicken. Since then he has rarely been apart from his master and mistress who, in reality, are Mr and Mrs Frank.

“He goes to every ballet and never misses a party with his master and mistress. The name Aspa which they gave him, is the Russian equivalent of ‘Fido’. The whole company co-operated to keep Aspa with them while they toured New Zealand”.

In her letters home to her mother in England, Betty referred to the dog as Apsia, not Apsa, and wrote of how much she cried when she left him with the Allen family (of the law firm, Allen, Allen & Hemsley) when the Australasian tour finally ended in July.'

1930 Cambridge Boulevard, Home of King Thompson, 1918

King Gibson Thompson’s home, located at 1930 Cambridge Boulevard on the corner of Edgemont Road, was completed in 1916. King Thompson, one of the founders and incorporators of Upper Arlington, lived there with his wife, the former Ethel Herrick, and children, Edward Herrick Thompson, Irma Francis Thompson, Frank King Thompson and Victor King Thompson. Ethel Thompson was a member of the Upper Arlington Red Cross Unit, established in 1917, which met weekly to socialize, as well as to sew towels, hospital clothes, and bandages in their contribution to the war effort. The Thompson family was very involved in the social life of their new community. In fact, the very first school was held in the basement of this home from 1917 to 1918 with twelve pupils in the first three grades.

King and his brother, Ben, initiated Upper Arlington’s establishment when they purchased 840 acres of the "most suitable, most convenient and the most beautiful rolling, partly wooded Ohio farmland" from James Terrell Miller in 1913. The land appealed to the Thompsons as a residential site because of its location on high ground, its proximity to both downtown Columbus and The Ohio State University campus, and its position upwind from larger cities. The beautiful land that was once a "well-managed, immaculately kept, working farm" was subdivided into 2500 lots. The King Thompson Company was started in 1914 to sell the new subdivision to the public. In August of 1914, laborers and teams of horses were hired by the Thompson brothers to construct the first street, named Roxbury Road, leading into this pristine new subdivision.

By 1915 six houses were built and early in 1916 both King and Ben Thompson completed construction on their own new homes. The Upper Arlington Company was formed in March 1917, to develop the land and construct streets, sewers and water lines. King Thompson's plan for this new community demanded that: one management oversaw the entire district, each house was located with respect to the location of houses on adjoining lots, and each lot was graded and landscaped in accordance with the scenery of neighboring areas so that consistency between plots was maintained. This theme of continuity and precision in landscaping is still observable in Upper Arlington neighborhoods. On March 20, 1918, the village of Upper Arlington, with 200 residents was incorporated.

King Thompson was born and raised in Georgetown, Ohio with his brother, Ben, and two sisters, Irma and Loula. After graduating from high school in his hometown, Ben moved to Delaware to attend Ohio Wesleyan University and later attended law school at The Ohio State University. While at Ohio State, King recognized the potential of the residential areas north and east of the university and launched his real estate career by developing many neighborhoods in this area. King Thompson had an entrepreneurial spirit and, as a young man, started a drayage business with a wagon and a team of horses. He was the first to organize a train to transport Ohio State fans to Ann Arbor to see the football game.

King was also an avid sportsman who loved to fish, hunt, play tennis and baseball, and pitch horseshoes. He was a part of the temporary committee charged with organizing the first Upper Arlington Golf Club in 1922 and was a member of the Upper Arlington Swimming Pool Association, which organized the 1928 construction of the Devon Road pool.

Ben Sells Thompson, 1918

Ben Sells Thompson, one of the founders of Upper Arlington, was born in Georgetown, Ohio in 1879. As a young man, he moved to Mansfield and worked in the hardware business. Later he attended the engineering college at The Ohio State University. In 1907, Ben joined his brother, King Thompson, in the real estate business.

In 1913, Ben Thompson and his brother, King, purchased 840 acres of land from James Terrell Miller to develop an "ideal residential community for Columbus." The land appealed to the Thompsons as a residential site because of its location on high ground, its proximity to both downtown Columbus and The Ohio State University campus, and its position upwind from larger cities. The beautiful land that was once a "well-managed, immaculately kept, working farm" was subdivided into 2500 lots. In 1914 the King Thompson Company was formed to sell this new community to the public. In August of 1914, laborers and teams of horses were hired by the Thompson brothers to construct the first street, named Roxbury Road, leading into this pristine new subdivision. Ben Thompson's home, located on Cambridge Boulevard, was completed in 1916.

In 1917, the Upper Arlington Company was established, with King Thompson as president and Ben Thompson as vice president, to manage the streets, sewers, and water lines. Ben Thompson also served as president of the Northwest Boulevard Company, which deeded the land that was eventually used to construct Northwest Boulevard. This road, known by many Upper Arlington residents as a crucial step in the development of the village, provided a convenient route from Upper Arlington directly to downtown Columbus.

On March 20, 1918 the village of Upper Arlington, with two hundred residents, was incorporated. Before the establishment of a police force, Ben Thompson was elected to the "high office of Marshal of Upper Arlington" for which he took no salary. Ben and King Thompson were very active in the life of their new community, entertaining residents, sponsoring athletic competitions, and organizing holiday activities for the families. Ben Thompson was a member of the first Village Commission, an appointed member of the Upper Arlington Park Board, and served as treasurer of the Men's Brotherhood, predecessor of the Upper Arlington Civic Association. Ben Thompson later accepted a secretarial position with the Y.M.C.A., and was stationed overseas in that capacity.

Ben Thompson was married to the former Catherine Pinney, of Flint, Ohio, and the couple resided at 1919 Cambridge Boulevard. Mrs. Thompson served as chairwoman of the Upper Arlington Red Cross Unit, established in 1917, which met weekly to socialize, as well as to sew towels, hospital clothes, and bandages in their contribution to the war effort. In addition to his work in real estate, Ben Thompson was an outdoorsman who enjoyed baseball, hunting and fishing. Ben once gave a "short and very interesting account of his northern hunting trip and the methods and difficulties encountered in bagging a grizzly bear."

Ben Thompson later accepted a secretarial position with the Y.M.C.A., and was stationed overseas in that capacity. Ben Thompson was married to the former Catherine Pinney, of Flint, Ohio. Mrs. Thompson served as chairwoman of the Upper Arlington Red Cross Unit, established in 1917, which met weekly to socialize, as well as to sew towels, hospital clothes, and bandages in their contribution to the war effort. In addition to his work in real estate, Ben Thompson was an outdoorsman who enjoyed baseball, hunting and fishing. Ben once gave a "short and very interesting account of his northern hunting trip and the methods and difficulties encountered in bagging a grizzly bear."

Credit: UA Archives - Upper Arlington Public Library (Repository: UA Historical Society). The residence of the Ben Sells Thompson family, completed in 1916, was located at 1919 Cambridge Boulevard. The property was later owned by Laura Thompson, Ralph Johansmann, Robert Atwell, and Claire Hamilton. Ben Sells Thompson, one of the founders of Upper Arlington, was born in Georgetown, Ohio in 1879. As a young man, he moved to Mansfield and worked in the hardware business. Later he attended the engineering college at The Ohio State University. In 1907, Ben joined his brother, King Thompson, in the real estate business. In 1913, Ben Thompson and his brother, King, purchased 840 acres of land from James Terrell Miller to develop an "ideal residential community for Columbus." The land appealed to the Thompsons as a residential site because of its location on high ground, its proximity to both downtown Columbus and The Ohio State University campus, and its position upwind from larger cities. The beautiful land that was once a "well-managed, immaculately kept, working farm" was subdivided into 2500 lots. In 1914 the King Thompson Company was formed to sell this new community to the public. In August of 1914, laborers and teams of horses were hired by the Thompson brothers to construct the first street, named Roxbury Road, leading into this pristine new subdivision.

In 1917, the Upper Arlington Company was established, with King Thompson as president and Ben Thompson as vice president, to manage the streets, sewers, and water lines. Ben Thompson also served as president of the Northwest Boulevard Company, which deeded the land that was eventually used to construct Northwest Boulevard. This road, known by many Upper Arlington residents as a crucial step in the development of the village, provided a convenient route from Upper Arlington directly to downtown Columbus. On March 20, 1918 the village of Upper Arlington, with two hundred residents, was incorporated. Before the establishment of a police force, Ben Thompson was elected to the "high office of Marshal of Upper Arlington" for which he took no salary. Ben and King Thompson were very active in the life of their new community, entertaining residents, sponsoring athletic competitions, and organizing holiday activities for the families. Ben Thompson was a member of the first Village Commission, an appointed member of the Upper Arlington Park Board, and served as treasurer of the Men's Brotherhood, predecessor of the Upper Arlington Civic Association.
