Samahram, is an ancient city in the Dhofar region south of Oman dating back thousands of years. The city especially famed for it's frankincense trade extending to markets as far as Middle East, Europe, Africa and Far East. Pulsatilla vulgaris is a surprisingly large and conspicuous spring flower It may be found in uncultivated grassland only. The plants with single blossoms that may be found growing in large groups are very much dependent on getting lots of light.
The plant is perennial. Blossoms can be seen in March and April. Dense hairs on petals and stem are a perfect protection both against cold night time temperatures and dry and windy conditions at daytime.
This plant is known to be effective in treating all pain involving the reproductive organs, and is especially noted for treating menstrual pain. Hat trick - Royal visitors in the Picture Gallery, Kilkenny Castle

A royal group in Kilkenny Castle, that beautiful castle in, arguably, Ireland's most beautiful city - but can we name this lot?

And indeed it seems we can. With thanks in particular to some our regular stalwart contributors (and newer blood), we have confirmation that this does capture a royal visit to the Marble City. The man-who-would-be-king (the Duke of York) and family visited the Butler/Ormonde family at their home in Kilkenny Castle in April 1899. While perhaps already on the road to confirmation, DannyM8 helped confirm the sometimes elusive trifecta of who, where, and when. An extract from the Irish Times summarises this "at home" gathering in the castle's noted picture gallery, and lists those present as the:
- Duke & Duchess of York (later George V & Queen Mary)
- Marquess & Lady Ormonde (James Butler & Elizabeth Grosvenor)
- Two other Ormondes (likely the Marquess' daughter & brother)
- Marshal & Lady Roberts (Frederick Roberts & Nora Bews)
- Viscount & Viscountess De Vesci (John Vesey & Evelyn Charteris)
- Lady Eva Dugdale (later Lady of the Bedchamber)

Memorial cross in Island Stroma, Caithness, Scotland, U.K Stroma was once a populous island in the Pentland Firth, finally deserted in 1962 now it's only inhabitants are a herd of sheep and various other wildlife. The people of Stroma were very close-knit and noted on several occasions for their striking manner and self-sufficiency. "From their political situation, and the simplicity, sobriety and industry, natural to them, there are perhaps few islanders on earth happier than those of Stroma." Most people lived in single-storey houses which had two main rooms, called the 'but' and 'ben'. In these houses, there was usually a small bedroom (called the 'closet') and a porch also. The 'but' was the living room where all everyday family life took place; the 'ben' however was only used on special occasions, like when visitors came. Each room had box-beds, these were often closed in by folding doors or curtains. Wooden boards were covered with a layer of straw and a chaff filled mattress, both were renewed every year. The pillows were stuffed with the feathers of the croft chickens which were killed, plucked then eaten (little went to waste), blankets made of sheep's fleece were made at the mill; together this made a very cosy bed. The 'but' held a stove and oven, along with a larder and crockery dresser. The stove and oven were the main means of heating in the croft house, all.
