The Great Egret (Ardea alba), also known as the Great White Egret or Common Egret or (now not in use) Great White Heron, is a large, widely-distributed egret. Distributed across most of the tropical and warmer temperate regions of the world, in southern Europe it is rather localized. In North America it is more widely distributed, and it is ubiquitous across the Sun Belt of the United States and in the rainforests of South America. It is sometimes confused with the Great White Heron in Florida, which is a white morph of the closely related Great Blue Heron (A. herodias). Note however that the name Great White Heron has occasionally been used to refer to the Great Egret.

Red-wattled Lapwings are large waders, about 35cm long (somewhat larger than a Rock Pigeon, with longer legs). The wings and back are light brown with a purple sheen, but head and chest and front part of neck are black. Prominently white patch runs between these two colours, from belly and tail, flanking the neck to the sides of crown. Short tail is tipped black. A red fleshy wattle in front of each eye, black-tipped red bill, and the long legs are yellow. In flight, prominent white wing bars formed by the white on the secondary coverts.

Race aigneri is slightly paler and larger than the nominate race and is found in Afghanistan and the Indus valley. The nominate race is found all over India. The Sri Lankan race lankae is smaller and dark while atronuchalis the race in north-eastern India and eastern Bangladesh has a white cheek surrounded by black.

Males and females are similar in plumage but males have a 5% longer wing and tend to have a longer carpal spur. The length of the birds is 320-350mm, wing of 208-247mm with the nominate averaging 223mm, Sri Lanka 217mm. The Bill is 31-36mm and tarsus of 70-83mm. Tail length is 104-128mm.

The Yellow-Winged Darter

The Yellow-Winged Darter is a small dragonfly. It's essentially an Eastern European species which occasionally spreads as far West as Iberia. Our photographs of the species were made in the Netherlands and, more recently, in Finland. Sympetrum flaveolum is an easily recognisable species; besides the male's orange (rather than red) colour, the most distinguishing feature is really the huge orange-yellow patch at the base of the hind wing.

Kekeno – New Zealand fur seal – Arctocephalus forsteri New Zealand fur seal The most common seal on the New Zealand mainland is the New Zealand fur seal which breeds around the South Island and as far north as the Coromandel Peninsula on the North Island with males occasionally found north of Auckland. Fur seals were hunted by both Maori and Europeans and were close to extinction by the mid-1800s. After protection in the 1890s, the population has recovered well and is likely to be in excess of 50 000 and increasing as they continue to spread north. Fur seals are a grey to dark brown colour with adult males much larger (up to 2.5m, 180kg) than females (up to 1.5m, 70kg). Fur seals in New Zealand prefer rocky shores but as with all eared seals are able to move quite quickly on land. At sea they mainly use the front flippers and will often porpoise out of the water when moving quickly. They feed on squid, octopus and a variety of fish. The triangular metal pieces are part of slotted yoke cranks which convert circular motion to a vertical motion that traces a sinusoid. Each slotted yoke crank is connected by a shaft to a pulley, which causes the pulley to follow the sinusoidal motion. In Search of Spring #4

April showers bring... ...silver linings. Spring appears slowly in the upper half of the northern hemisphere. Once the snow has melted away and the temperatures rise above freezing, the landscape stays brown and grey for several weeks. Colours slowly emerge from the deep freeze. At times, this can be disappointing. One longs for vibrant greens of grasses and leaves. One longs for explosions of reds, yellows and purples of flowers. Occasionally, one might spy a few remnants of autumn colours in leaves that have somehow managed to stay latched to branches throughout the arctic chill of winter. But wait! There is opportunity to be had in this adversity. What a distraction spring can be. The lure of gardens, parks, woods and beaches can take one away from important tasks. This is a time for many to be putting in their last strong efforts to complete their studies, to complete course projects, to spend countless hours in libraries and study rooms preparing for exams. I say, put the brakes on spring. Delay the wonderful colours. There is a time for every season, and this is not one of them! Mormon Lake is the largest natural lake in Arizona... sometimes. During droughts it's frequently not so large, and not so much a lake. Occasionally it's even bone dry. Wet or not, this has an excellent overlook where you can often see wildlife and birds across the lake's landscape. In the late summer of 2016, a large herd of elk took up residence.
