Early morning hike on Inner Basin Trail, San Francisco Peaks. 2009-05-30: Saturday evening, we were sitting on the front porch after our evening walk, enjoying a cup of chai and watching the sun set. There had been rain during the late afternoon, and heavy clouds had descended over the Peaks, hiding the mountain from view. The clouds had lifted in time for our evening ritual, and we noticed there was new snow on the upper tips of the Peaks. As we sipped our tea, we joked “If we were really motivated, we’d get up early, hit the Inner Basin Trail at dawn, and get some good photos before the snow melts off…” 2009-05-31: …so, at 4:00AM we stumbled out of bed, grabbed some coffee, got dressed, grabbed more coffee and rolled out the door around 4:30AM. We drove up the mountain, and hit the trail around 5:15AM. There was a bit of a breeze making the hike rather chilly. Everything was wet and green, and the aspens created a delectable aroma. Past Jack Spring (1.5 miles from the trailhead) we hit the frost line, and the vegetation sparkled (and the air was noticeably chillier). We arrived at the Inner Basin (the point where there’s a shelter and pumphouse, and all the Peaks are visible) around 6:45AM. We’d expected some shade still at that hour, and were delighted to discover the sun was shining right up through the low point in the Peaks (the north-eastern side, where the wall was blown out during an eruption), lighting up the entire Inner Basin for us. Past Jack Spring (1.5 miles from the trailhead) we hit the frost line, and the vegetation sparkled (and the air was noticeably chillier). We arrived at the Inner Basin (the point where there’s a shelter and pumphouse, and all the Peaks are visible) around 6:45AM. We’d expected some shade still at that hour, and were delighted to discover the sun was shining right up through the low point in the Peaks (the north-eastern side, where the wall was blown out during an eruption), lighting up the entire Inner Basin for us. A semi-close up of a goose's head. This photo was taken at a local park. The geese in this area are fed a lot of (white) bread, although it is often said bread is unhealthy for this type of animal. I am wondering whether natural selection has already filtered out the geese that can't digest the bread, as feeding the geese has sort of been a tradition in this area. All photos I upload can be used for free and are copyright free (CC0). I add new photos daily. For my full portfolio of free stock images you can see StockyPics. Com. Secret Canyon Trail

Secret Canyon Trail **Sedona Loop Hike - Secret Canyon, David Miller, Bear Sign, and Dry Creek Trails 2009-03-18: With the increasingly long days, we decided to hike the Secret Canyon, Dave Miller, Bear Sign, and Dry Creek loop for our midweek hike. The entire loop is approximately 6.5 miles long. The loop starts at Secret Canyon trailhead, following the first two miles of the trail through wide open canyon with fantasic redrock views. David Miller Trail comes in from the left right before Secret Canyon Trail turns to go deep into Secret Canyon. David Miller serves as a joiner trail between Secret Canyon and Bear Sign Trails. The trail is one mile long, with a moderately strenuous (but thankfully short, quarter mile) climb up to a pass. The views from the trail are absolutely fantastic, however the pass itself is fairly heavily treed, so be the best views are from the trail before reaching the pass. The trail on the Bear Sign Canyon side of the pass is steeper and the canyon is heavily forested. The descent from the pass to the canyon floor is approximately 200 vertical feet. Turning right on Bear Sign Trail leads 2.25 miles through the heavily forested, steep, narrow canyon. The canyon is very pretty, and a great hike for escaping the heat on warmer days. The trail drops down into the wash nears the end, joining up at Dry Creek Trail where two drainages meet. Veering left on Dry Creek Trail, the trail offers some nice canyon views before arriving at the Dry Creek/Vultee’s Arch trailhead after 0.75 mile. Secret Canyon trailhead is a mile hike down the dirt road from the Dry Creek/Vultee’s Arch trailhead. After an early morning hike on Inner Basin Trail in the San Francisco Peaks, stopped by the tank in Lockett Meadow to enjoy the reflection of the snowy Peaks. 2009-05-30: Saturday evening, we were sitting on the front porch after our evening walk, enjoying a cup of chai and watching the sun set. There had been rain during the late afternoon, and heavy clouds had descended over the Peaks, hiding the mountain from view. The clouds had lifted in time for our evening ritual, and we noticed there was new snow on the upper tips of the Peaks. As we sipped our tea, we joked “If we were really motivated, we’d get up early, hit the Inner Basin Trail at dawn, and get some good photos before the snow melts off…” 2009-05-31: …so, at 4:00AM we stumbled out of bed, grabbed some coffee, got dressed, grabbed more coffee and rolled out the door around 4:30AM. We drove up the mountain, and hit the trail around 5:15AM. There was a bit of a breeze making the hike rather chilly. Everything was wet and green, and the aspens created a delectable aroma. Past Jack Spring (1.5 miles from the trailhead) we hit the frost line, and the vegetation sparkled (and the air was noticeably chillier). We arrived at the Inner Basin (the point where there’s a shelter and pumphouse, and all the Peaks are visible) around 6:45AM. We’d expected some shade still at that hour, and were delighted to discover the sun was shining right up through the low point in the Peaks (the north-eastern side, where the wall was blown out during an eruption), lighting up the entire Inner Basin for us. We wandered around a bit capturing various shots, then headed back to attend to our day’s activities. Hiking report View all the photos from this hike

Guoliang Tunnel in Henan province of China

The Guoliang Tunnel is carved along the side of and through a mountain in China. The tunnel is located in the Taihang Mountains which are situated in the Henan Province of China. Photos of the road are often misidentified as photos of the Road of Death in Bolivia. Before the tunnel was constructed, access to the nearby Guoliang village was limited to a difficult path carved into the mountainside. The village is nestled in a valley surrounded by towering mountains cut off from civilization. In 1972 a group of villagers led by Shen Mingxin decided to carve a road into the side of the mountain. They raised money to purchase hammers and steel tools. Thirteen villagers began the project. The tunnel is 1.2 kilometres (0.75 mi) long, 5 metres (16 ft) tall and 4 metres (13 ft) wide.
