A dragonfly is a winged insect belonging to the order Odonata, the suborder Epiprocta or, in the strict sense, the infraorder Anisoptera. It is characterized by large multifaceted eyes, two pairs of strong transparent wings, and an elongated body. Dragonflies are valuable predators that eat mosquitoes, and other small insects like flies, bees, ants, wasps, and very rarely butterflies. They are usually found around marshes, lakes, ponds, streams, and wetlands because their larvae, known as nymphs, are aquatic. Baby Desert Tortoise

Baby Desert Tortoise — Here's your "awwwwwwww, so cute!" moment for the day...nothing tops this one. Here we see a a desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) hatching from its egg, as photographed by one of our USGS scientists at the Western Ecological Research Center. USGS studies the life history and ecology of the desert tortoise, which is a federally listed threatened species only found in the Mojave Desert. Young tortoises are especially prone to predators like dogs and ravens, whose numbers can increase around areas of human activity and structures. Adult tortoises can be killed by car traffic, ingesting trash, and wildfires, and are affected by loss of habitat from urban and industrial development, cutting short their potential lifespan of 100 years. USGS research on desert tortoises are helping federal and state management agencies improve land use and conservation plans, and balance the recovery of this threatened species with other resource use priorities in the Mojave Desert landscape. White-faced Saki Monkey The white-faced saki called the Guinean saki and the golden-faced saki, is a species of the New World saki monkey. They can be found in Brazil, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname and Venezuela. This species lives in the understory and lower canopy of the forest, feeding mostly on fruits, nuts, seeds, and insects. Although they are arboreal creatures and are specialists of swinging from tree to tree (brachiation), they are also terrestrial when foraging. White-faced sakis typically live around 14 years in their natural habitat and have been recorded to live up to 36 years in captivity. Sakis are active in the day and sleep highly elevated in trees with many leaves to shelter them from weather and flying predators. A formerly recognized subspecies of this monkey, was elevated to full species status in 2014. Chester Zoo Cheshire 58/365. Polar Bear Feeding

This weekend I visited the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro, North Carolina. I saw so many fascinating organisms there, but this Polar Bear (Ursus Maritimus) during his feeding time was one of the most striking. Polar Bears are apex predators as well as a keystone species in their Arctic habitats. Predominately carnivores, Polar Bears love to eat harbor seals. However, they will scavenge when their primary prey is in shortage. Human influence and global warming has greatly impacted the Polar Bear populations. In their Arctic habitats, Polar Bears live on ice and will swim to travel and to find food. As the ice melts more rapidly due to climate change, Polar Bears have increased chances of dying trying to hunt their food with not as many areas to land for a rest in between swims. Also, Poaching has negatively effected Polar Bear populations. Sadly, the Polar Bear is considered a "vulnerable" species with scientists predicting a very grim future for the future populations of Polar Bears. The monarch needs no camouflage because it is poisonous to predators; in fact, its vivid colors are designed to ward off critters that may want to eat it. The monarch is poisonous because the developing larvae ingest to xins from the milkweed plant as they feed on the leaves. These chemicals rema in permanently in the monarch’s system, even after the caterpillar metamorphoses to a butterfly. The monarch’s survival is closely linked to the chemical defense system derived from the milk weed toxins and the nutrition supplied to the developing larvae.
