The Common Moorhen, or Common Gallinule, (Gallinula chloropus) is a bird in the Rail family with an almost worldwide distribution. It lives around well-vegetated marshes, ponds, canals, etc. The species is not found in the polar regions, or many tropical rainforests. But elsewhere the Common Moorhen is likely the most commonly seen Rail species to most people, excepting the Coot in some regions.

Oystercatchers on a Beach, Scotland, U.K. Between April and June oystercatchers are more often seen inland in Scotland. In July the adults can be seen feeding their adult-sized young on the seashore. These juveniles have black on the end of half of their beak. Oystercatchers are found on the coast throughout the rest of the year. The name oystercatcher was coined by Mark Catesby in 1731 as a common name for the North American species H. Palliatus, described as eating oysters. Yarrell in 1843 established this as the preferred term, replacing the older name sea pie or sea-pie. The bird still lives up to its name, as it is one of the few wading birds that is capable of opening oysters at all. Three races are breeding in western Europe, central Eurasia, Kamchatka, China, and the Western coast of Korea. A group of oystercatchers are known as a "parcel" or "stew" of oystercatchers.

Four color theorem

The idea of this picture came to me while playing around with the "four color theorem". This theorem states that, given any separation of a plane into contiguous regions, producing a figure called a map, no more than four colors are required to color the regions of the map so that no two adjacent regions have the same color. Well, in this case only two colours are needed: black and white. And I love the result! __ As all the pictures in my gallery, this is a FREE picture. Gas hydrates that is! Gas hydrates are naturally occurring “ice-like” combinations of natural gas and water that have the potential to provide an immense resource of natural gas from the world’s oceans and polar regions. Gas hydrates are known to be widespread in permafrost regions and beneath the sea in sediments of outer continental margins. It is generally accepted that the volume of natural gas contained in the world's gas hydrate accumulations greatly exceeds that of known gas reserves. There is also growing evidence that natural gas can be produced from gas hydrates with existing conventional oil and gas production technology. The USGS is participating in several international consortia of research, industry, and academic institutions.
