Ankara Opera Building

The Ankara Opera Building, which hosts performances by the Ankara State Opera and Ballet and Ankara State Theater was designed and built as an exhibition center and only later converted into an opera house. In 1933 the National Economy Community opened an international competition for the building stating that it had to be in modernist style. A proposal by Şevki Balmumcu received first prize and construction went ahead between 1933 and 1934. In 1948 Paul Bonatz converted the building into an opera house and his addition of traditional Turkish architectural details made it more “national.” Balmumcu was not consulted about the building’s renovation, which disappointed and professionally disturbed him for years to come. In the garden of the building there are sculptures of Leyla Gencer, Cüneyt Gencer and Muhsin Ertuğrul.

Biography: Rosa Parks's deliberate decision to test the practice of Jim Crow was the catalyst that triggered the 1955 bus boycott in Montgomery, Ala. The daughter of James and Leona Edwards McCauley, she grew up in Pine Level, Ala., and was sent away to a private girls' school in Montgomery at the age of 11. She later met Raymond Parks, a serious young barber with whom she spent many hours discussing the burden and injustice of the racial situation; they married in 1932. Mr. Parks was a member of the National Committee to Save the Scottsboro Boys, and she soon joined him in becoming active in the Montgomery chapter of the NAACP, serving as secretary and youth adviser. On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat for a white passenger on a Montgomery bus. Her arrest and the subsequent development of a 381-day bus boycott by tens of thousands heralded a new phase in the civil rights movement. The Black community formed the Montgomery Improvement Association, electing as president Martin Luther King, Jr.; Mrs. Parks served for a time on its board of directors. Fired from her job as an assistant tailor in a department store, she stayed in Montgomery until the boycott forced an end to all discriminatory practices on the bus lines. In 1957 she and her husband moved to Detroit, Mich., where in 1965 she took a part-time job as receptionist and administrative aide in the office of Congressman John Conyers. She was the first woman in 1980 to receive the Martin Luther King, Jr., Nonviolent Peace Prize. There is a National Committee for the Rosa L. Parks Shrine, organized to commemorate her life by the establishment of a home and library.

Former commissariat Stores building in Brisbane ca 1928

Location: Brisbane

Description: The Commissariat Store in Brisbane is Queensland’s second-oldest building, surpassed only by the Old Observatory in Wickham Terrace. Constructed between May 1828 and December 1829 during the regime of Captain Patrick Logan, Commandant of the Moreton Bay penal settlement, the Commissariat Store is of Georgian design with freestone walls. In 1886 a single-storey brick building was added to the south-east wing, with a second storey being completed in 1900, though the entire wing was later demolished. In 1912-1913 a third storey was added to the entire existing structure.

When first completed, the Commissariat Store was contiguous to a wharf and crane for the convenient unloading of docked vessels. After fulfilling this role the building was used to house immigrants, as offices for the Queensland Law Reform Commission and as a repository for Queensland State Archives. Fittingly, the Commissariat Store now serves as the headquarters of the Royal Historical Society of Queensland. General note: Excerpt of original. This film provides extensive footage of the St. Augustine race riots. In this clip, black demonstrators are attacked on Butler Beach and groups of blacks and whites occupy the streets at night. The complete film shows demonstrations by blacks on Butler Beach in St. Augustine, counter demonstrations by whites, speeches made by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Governor Farris Bryant, and speeches by segregationists such as Reverend Connie Lynch, Richard "Hoss" Manucy, and Klansman J.B. Stoner. It also includes scenes of the highway patrol sent in to assist local law enforcement officials.

Ankara Opera Building

The Ankara Opera Building, which hosts performances by the Ankara State Opera and Ballet and Ankara State Theater was designed and built as an exhibition center and only later converted into an opera house. In 1933 the National Economy Community opened an international competition for the building stating that it had to be in modernist style. A proposal by Şevki Balmumcu received first prize and construction went ahead between 1933 and 1934. In 1948 Paul Bonatz converted the building into an opera house and his addition of traditional Turkish architectural details made it more “national.” Balmumcu was not consulted about the building’s renovation, which disappointed and professionally disturbed him for years to come. In the garden of the building there are sculptures of Leyla Gencer, Cüneyt Gencer and Muhsin Ertuğrul.

Günümüzde hem Ankara Devlet Opera ve Balesi temsillerine ev sahipliği yapan hem de Büyük Tiyatro adıyla Ankara Devlet Tiyatrosu için bir sahne olarak hizmet veren Ankara Opera Binası, ilk olarak bir sergi sarayı olarak inşa edildi, daha sonra opera binasına dönüştürüldü. Binanın tasarımına, Milli İktisat ve Tasarruf Cemiyeti’nin 1933’te açtığı uluslararası bir yarışma sonunda karar verildi. Yarışmanın duyurusunda, tasarımın modernist üslupta olması gerektiği özellikle belirtildi. Birinci seçilerek mimarı Şevki Balmumcu’ya büyük bir prestij kazandıran proje 1933-1934 yıllarında uygulandı. Paul Bonatz, 1948’te binayı işlevinden çok farklı olarak bir opera binasına çevirdi; Geleneksel Türk Mimarlığı’ndan detaylar ekleyerek binayı “millîleştirdi”. Tasarladığı binanın kendisine hiç danışılmadan, dönemin eğilimi olan İkinci Ulusal Mimarlık’a uygun hâle getirilmesi, Balmumcu’yu mesleki anlamda olumsuz etkiledi. Caddeye paralel uzanan ve birbirini dik kesen iki kitleden oluşan binanın bahçesinde Leyla Gencer, Cüneyt Gencer ve Muhsin Ertuğrul’un heykelleri bulunmaktadır.
