Weaving Fence and Horn

Calgarians welcomed a new piece of public sculpture downtown during the summer of 2002. John McEwen's â€œWeaving Fence and Hornâ€ sits on the corner of 1 Street and 4 Avenue SW in front of the TransCanada Tower. Installed in June, the sculpture consists of two componentsâ€” a metal ram's horn and a fence. According to the artist, the weaving refers to the undulation of fences as they snake across the rolling prairies and to the weaving of dialogue between fence and horn. The sculpture will also function as a windbreak, reducing the blustery nature of one of downtown Calgary's windiest street corners.

The longest source for Hubbard Glacier originates 122 kilometres (76 mi) from its snout and is located at about 61Â°00â€²N 140Â°09â€²W, approximately 8 kilometres (5 mi) west of Mount Walsh with an altitude around 11,000 feet (3,400 m). A shorter tributary glacier begins at the easternmost summit on the Mount Logan ridge at about 18,300 feet (5,600 m) at about 60Â°35â€²0â€³N 140Â°22â€²40â€³W. Before it reaches the sea, Hubbard is joined by the Valerie Glacier to the west, which, through forward surges of its own ice, has contributed to the advance of the ice flow that experts believe will eventually dam the Russell Fjord from Disenchantment Bay waters. The sculpture, by renowned Saskatchewan artist Joe Fafard celebrates the Canadian horse, the role it played in the history of Canada and how it ties all Canadians together. The powder-coated 5/8-inch cut-steel plate horses are in different poses representing movement: past, present, future in a symphony of colours. An identical sculpture can be found on the Promenade Samuel de Champlain along the banks of the St. Lawrence River in Calgary's first sister city, Quebec City.
