Hat trick - Royal visitors in the Picture Gallery, Kilkenny Castle

A royal group in Kilkenny Castle, that beautiful castle in, arguably, Ireland's most beautiful city - but can we name this lot?

And indeed it seems we can. With thanks in particular to some our regular stalwart contributors (and newer blood), we have confirmation that this does capture a royal visit to the Marble City. The man-who-would-be-king (the Duke of York) and family visited the Butler/Ormonde family at their home in Kilkenny Castle in April 1899. While perhaps already on the road to confirmation, DannyM8 helped confirm the sometimes elusive trifecta of who, where, and when. An extract from the Irish Times summarises this "at home" gathering in the castle's noted picture gallery, and lists those present as the:
- Duke & Duchess of York (later George V & Queen Mary)
- Marquess & Lady Ormonde (James Butler & Elizabeth Grosvenor)
- Two other Ormondes (likely the Marquess' daughter & brother)
- Marshal & Lady Roberts (Frederick Roberts & Nora Bews)
- Viscount & Viscountess De Vesci (John Vesey & Evelyn Charteris)
- Lady Eva Dugdale (later Lady of the Bedchamber)
- Earl of Ava (Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood d.1900)
- Sir Charles Leopold Cust (baronet)
- Sir Francis De Winton
- Mr J. T Seigne JP (officer of Ormonde's estate?)
- and "Mr Moncrieffe"

We even see forebears of both the visitors and the hosts in the portraits to the rear...

H.M. watching a trench mortar bombardment

King George V and his entourage watching a trench mortar bombardment. They are all in uniform and are standing with their backs to the camera. The King is most likely the figure standing in front, furthest from the camera. The group are standing on a grassy plain and are watching the distant bombardment.

Members of royalty touring the Western Front were kept well behind the front line, away from any active fighting. Visits, however, were sometimes made to newly captured and secure areas of the Front. There are images in this collection of King George V visiting a number of battlefields, after the event.

A team in Waterford with Kilkenny-like vertical stripes may not have been too popular in inter-county circles - but these lads look like they could cope with the slagging! A fine Poole shot of a hurling team to remind us that yet another All Ireland season is in full swing.

With thanks to all of the contributions today, in particular Niall McAuley, swordscookie, j.coffey78, and guliolopez, we know that the team pictured (or at least most of them) challenged for the 1916 Waterford County Hurling Final around the time of this photo. They forced a replay with Ferrybank GAA club. But lost out to Ferrybank in the end 5-0 to 3-3. guliolopez helpfully links us to a write up of the replayed final which lists the team as:
 T King (goal), J Hogan, L Cantwell, R Cantwell, P Durley, T Smyth, W Walsh, J Power, M Fitzpatrick, M Baldwin, P Purcell, W Sullivan, T McCormack, J Geary, R McKenna

A player who didn't make the replay (D Quinn) may also be captured here. It's proposed that, as perhaps the person who commissioned the photo, J(ohn?) Hogan could be the captain pictured....

The Queen is dead, long live the King!

This unusual piece of photo journalism from the Clonbrock Collection. Queen Victoria's long reign had come to an end and her son, the Prince of Wales had come to the throne as King Edward VII. The Dillon family captured the proclamation outside a courthouse amidst great pomp and ceremony and at least one hat being held aloft!

On 22 November Prince William will be visiting Sunderland and South Tyneside to take part in a number of youth development events. During the visit he will also officially open Haven Point, the new leisure centre in South Shields.

To celebrate this Tyne & Wear Archives has produced a short flickr set remembering past royal visits to the region’s shipyards. Most of the visits featured here took place during difficult times and they gave a real boost to public spirits in the face of two World Wars.

King George V is talking to three Australian nurses. The nurses are dressed in crisp white uniforms, and the King and the three men with him are also in uniform. They all appear to be standing on a deck or platform. During their visits to the Western Front, King George V and Queen Mary toured many hospitals spending time with both staff and patients.

Nursing was just one way in which women could play an active role in the war. Others included construction and repair work, clerical and administrative work, driver, telephone operator and telegraphist.

Arrival of President Raymond Poincare of France (right of centre) in Le Quesnoy. Photograph taken 10 November 1918 by Henry Armytage Sanders.
Inscriptions: Inscribed - Photographer's title on negative -bottom left: H1237.
The President was accompanied by the Prefect of the Department of the North, and the local member of Parliament. The visit marked France symbolically taking posession of the town liberated by foreign troops. It was also the first time that a President of France had visited Le Quesnoy. This visit was to be followed on 18 November by a visit of King George V of Britain.
