This pest, is also known in some countries as the green vegetable bug. It occurs throughout the Americas, in various Pacific Islands, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and Africa. First seen in Hawaii in 1961 on Oahu, it has spread to all major islands. The bugs feed by piercing plant tissue with needle-like stylets. The actual feeding puncture is not immediately visible. Adults and nearly all nymphal stages (2nd to 5th nymphal stages) feed on a variety of plant tissue. Succulent parts of the plant and the developing flowers or fruit are preferred. Feeding injury becomes visible sometime after actual feeding. Feeding on flower buds results in premature abscission. Fossil Creek 2006

View of the canyon above Fossil Creek from Fossil Creek Road (FR 708) in 2006. The flume (now removed) that once fed water from the diversion dam at the springs to the Irving power plant is visible running along the length of the canyon. This section of road is currently (2016) closed due to safety issues caused by rock falls along the cliff above the road. Fossil Creek is one of only two National Wild & Scenic rivers in Arizona and is fed by springs coming from the cliffs of the Mogollon Rim. Over 30 million gallons of water are discharged each day at a constant 70°F. The high mineral content leaves travertine dams and deposits, giving rise to fossil-like features. In 2005, Arizona Public Service (APS) decommissioned the Fossil Creek Dam and Flume, restoring full flows to Fossil Creek. The diversion dam at Fossil Springs was partially removed, allowing the creek to flow freely. The flume that once carried water to the power plant was disassembled. The Irving power plant and other buildings around the site were removed. Traces of history remain visible at the Irving site and along the Flume Trail in the form of old building foundations, rock work along the flume's maintenance road, and concrete pilings that once supported the flume. Tide Predicting Machine No. 2 ("Old Brass Brains"&#x29

Tide Predicting Machine No. 2 is a special purpose mechanical analog computer for predicting the height and time of high and low tides. When the machine was routinely used, the operator would sit at the desk and turn the crank on the left, which powered the machine. Mechanical components, partially visible on the left, computed the height of tides. These were displayed on the paper tide curve visible at the top right and on the dial below the paper. The U.S. government used Tide Predicting Machine No. 2 from 1910 to 1965 to predict tides for ports around the world. The machine, also known as “Old Brass Brains,” uses an intricate arrangement of gears, pulleys, chains, slides, and other mechanical components to perform the computations. A person using the machine would require 2-3 days to compute a year’s tides at one location. A person performing the same calculations by hand would require hundreds of days to perform the work. Tide Predicting Machine No. 2 is a special purpose mechanical analog computer for predicting the height and time of high and low tides. The U.S. government used Tide Predicting Machine No. 2 from 1910 to 1965 to predict tides for ports around the world. The machine, also known as “Old Brass Brains,” uses an intricate arrangement of gears, pulleys, chains, slides, and other mechanical components to perform the computations. A person using the machine would require 2-3 days to compute a year’s tides at one location. A person performing the same calculations by hand would require hundreds of days to perform the work.
