King George V and Queen Mary visited the Western Front on a number of occasions during World War I. Queen Mary spent a lot of her time visiting sick and wounded soldiers in hospitals behind the front line. An important function of royal visits was to raise the spirits of those involved in every aspect of the war.

Arrival of President Poincare at Le Quesnoy

The President was accompanied by the Prefect of the Department of the North, and the local member of Parliament. The visit marked France symbolically taking posession of the town liberated by foreign troops. It was also the first time that a President of France had visited Le Quesnoy. This visit was to be followed on 18 November by a visit of King George V of Britain.

Hat trick - Royal visitors in the Picture Gallery, Kilkenny Castle

A royal group in Kilkenny Castle, that beautiful castle in, arguably, Ireland's most beautiful city - but can we name this lot?

And indeed it seems we can. With thanks in particular to some our regular stalwart contributors (and newer blood), we have confirmation that this does capture a royal visit to the Marble City. The man-who-would-be-king (the Duke of York) and family visited the Butler/Ormonde family at their home in Kilkenny Castle in April 1899. While perhaps already on the road to confirmation, DannyM8 helped confirm the sometimes elusive trifecta of who, where, and when. An extract from the Irish Times summarises this "at home" gathering in the castle's noted picture gallery, and lists those present as the:
- Duke & Duchess of York (later George V & Queen Mary)
- Marquess & Lady Ormonde (James Butler & Elizabeth Grosvenor)
- Two other Ormondes (likely the Marquess' daughter & brother)
- Marshal & Lady Roberts (Frederick Roberts & Nora Bews)
- Viscount & Viscountess De Vesci (John Vesey & Evelyn Charteris)
- Lady Eva Dugdale (later Lady of the Bedchamber)

The Shields Daily News for 18 December 1915 reports:

“SOLDIER CHARGED WITH THEFT AT NORTH SHIELDS.

At North Shields today, Thomas Henry Miller (24), a soldier, of Walsall Street Court, West Bromwich, was brought up on remand, charged with having stolen on the 22nd November, from the North Shields railway station, a brown leather kit bag and contents, valued at £3 19s 6d, the property of Lieut. Traill of the 3rd Batt. Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, stationed at the King Edward Schools. The case was fully gone into yesterday but the sentence was postponed for the purpose of making enquiries about the defendant’s character. An officer gave the defendant a good character and said he had nothing against him. The defendant was bound over for 6 months in the sum of £5.”

These images are taken from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 (TWAM ref. DX1388/1). This set is our selection of the best mugshots taken during the First World War. They have been chosen because of the sharpness and general quality of the images. The album doesn’t record the details of each prisoner’s crimes, just their names and dates of arrest.

In order to discover the stories behind the mugshots, staff from Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums visited North Shields Local Studies Library where they carefully searched through microfilm copies of the ‘Shields Daily News’ looking for newspaper reports of the court cases. The newspaper reports have been transcribed and added below each mugshot.

Combining these two separate records gives us a fascinating insight into life on the Home Front during the First World War. These images document the lives of people of different ages and backgrounds, both civilians and soldiers. Our purpose here is not to judge them but simply to reflect the realities of their time.

The name “Guardia” in Italian means “watch” and the shrine is so called because the Mount Figogna, in the Middle Ages was a strategic observation post.

It is a dormant stratovolcano that last erupted in 1707â€“1708.[4][5] Mount Fuji lies about 100 kilometers 60 mi south-west of Tokyo, and can be seen from there on a clear day. Mount Fuji`s exceptionally symmetrical cone, which is snow-capped for about 5 months a year, is commonly used as a symbol of Japan and it is frequently depicted in art and photographs, as well as visited by sightseers and climbers.
