Its site is on what amounts to a promontory projecting into the eastern end of Loch Tay, formed by the loch to its south and west, and the River Tay to its north.
Kenmore, as you see it today, was built as a planned estate village by the Earl of Breadalbane in the years following 1755. It stood on the site of an earlier village which in medieval times may have been known as Inchadnie. Another account suggests that Inchadnie was actually a distinct village which until 1550 stood beside a ford over the River Tay a little to the east. It was then removed to make way for the construction of the principal seat of the Campbells of Breadalbane, Balloch Castle, the predecessor of Taymouth Castle. Today we have a carefully posed shot with boys sprinkled like raisins in a currant bun and a man, a teacher perhaps, sitting on a tree! In the background is what appears to be an enormous institutional type of building. I will be interested to see if we can identify this one...

....and indeed O Mac was relatively quick off the mark identifying the building as Saint Senan's Psychiatric Hospital, County Wexford. Also known as "Enniscorthy District Lunatic Asylum for the Insane Poor of Mind", it was opened in the 1860s, and there's a suggestion that this image was taken in the first decade(s) of its operation. Closed as a hospital within the last 5 years, viewing more recent photos of the building, one might be forgiven for thinking it had been shut for somewat longer.

A strange and somehow familiar building - is Sligo Townhall

This very fine Stereo Pairs image of a familiar building shows it in great detail and clarity in a way that we will probably never see it again? I love the windows in particular and the imposing majesty of the building. The first time I ever saw it back in the 1950's I thought it was a palace!

With thanks in particular today to sharon.corbet, beachcomberaustralia, Niall McAuley, and Nl042 we have additional detail on this building - which is Sligo Townhall. As it was opened in c.1872, and as we cannot see the nearby gatehouse which was built c.1876, the date range for this image (in a manner not always possible for STP images) has been refined to just a few years in the mid-1870s....

Saint Marie Castle was build between 1397 and 1427 as a massive brick and sandstone palace for the bishops of Lausanne. When they were overthrown, the chateau became the residence of new overlords, the bailiffs of Bern. The fight for the independence of Lausanne and Vaud canton was led by Jean Davel, who was killed in 1723. His memorial stands now in front of the castle, used today as the seat of the cantonal authorities of Vaud. The Vienna City Hall and Hofburgtheater

The City Hall is one of the most splendid amongst the numerous monumental buildings along Vienna's. Designed by Friedrich Schmidt (1825-1891), it was erected between 1872 and 1883. The architecture of the Ringstraße is dominated by historicism. In Historicism various stylistic elements of the past were combined into a style in its own right. Friedrich Schmidt however orientated himself just on one particular epoch. The City Hall was built in gothical style, with a tower similar to gothic cathedrals. The gothic era saw the growth of the cities and the emergence of an urban burgeoisie. Today the City Hall is the head office of Vienna's municipal administration. More than 2000 people work in the building. Visitors are stunned by the magnificent appointments of the state rooms, which frequently provide an atmospheric backdrop to various events such as press conferences, concerts or balls. The Burgtheater – Imperial Court Theatre, or Hofburgtheater, is the Austrian National Theatre in Vienna and one of the most important German language theatres in the world. It was created in 1741 by Habsburg Empress Maria Theresa of Austria to be a theatre next to her palace, and her son, Emperor Joseph II called it the German National Theatre in 1776. Three Mozart operas premiered there: Die Entführung aus dem Serail (1782), Le nozze di Figaro (1786) and Così fan tutte (1790). The tower was built by the Genoese in 1348, during their occupation of the area, primarily to prevent attacks. Originally known as the Tower of Christ, it stood above the fortification surrounding the Genoese city-state. There is a spiral rock staircase which ascends to the top viewing platform, which today offers visitors spectacular 360 degree panorama of the entire city.

The tower was restored in 1967, and an elevator was installed to offer a less tiring alternative to the steep climb. There is also a restaurant on the top floor. Walking on the mountain, today, I took a little rest on the trail and coming from the bush, come this puppy... soon followed by 6 others!!! (who was all Black and white). The mother (wild dog) was not around and we have a sweet time playing all together. Was not easy to live them and I've been thinking twice about taking this one with me, but unfortunately, actually, I really can't.
