Koxinga Ancestral Shrine is a family shrine built in West Central District, Tainan, Taiwan in 1663 by Zheng Jing, to worship his father Koxinga. When Taiwan became part of the Qing Empire, it was renamed "The Cheng's Ancestral Shrine" and today the official name is "Ancestral Shrine of Koxinga". The complex is traditional and elegant. There is an old well in front of the gate and this is all that remains of the original shrine. At first some wooden protective walls was erected here, later, in 1529, destroyed by Petru Rares. On the same spot they built a stone citadel called Cetatuia (1553), destroyed by fire in 1618 and re-built in 1625. For protective purposes the inhabitants added to the initial building four massive stone bastions in 1630. The citadel was abandoned later, after technological innovations made cannons stronger than the building. It served as a garrison for habsburgic army (18th century) and prison for a while (1940-1954). Today the citadel is turned into a restaurant called „Cetate”. The lighting was a bit yellow from my desk lamp, and I have been doing a lot of black and white, so I just set in the low contrast sepia preset in Aperture, but bumped contrast a tad. Streamgage vs. Streamgauge — One of the many questions that people have asked from time to time is the spelling of the word "streamgage" versus spelling it with a "u" as in "streamgauge." Since today is #NationalGrammarDay we thought it would be a good time for a quick history lesson on this question. Buried deep on Page 50 of the USGS report, "A History of the Water Resources Branch, U.S. Geological Survey: Volume I, From Predecessor Surveys to June 30, 1919" (on.doi.gov/USGSWaterHistory) there's a reference giving credit to the change in spelling to F.H. Newell around 1892. The author writes: "At about this time, F.H. Newell adopted the spelling "gage" instead of "gauge." As he informed the writer, "gage" was the Saxon spelling before the "u" was inserted as a result of Norman influence on the language. F.H. Ever since the Saxon settlers arrived in the early 12th century, invading Tartars, Turks and others gave them a tough time, repeatedly destroying the old settlements of Bartholomew and Corona. When they had quite enough of it all, the Saxons set themselves to build fortifications around their town, first consisting of earthen walls and wooden barriers, later reinforced with stones. Most work was done between 1400 and 1650, when outer and inner walls were erected, together with massive defense towers and gates. The defense wall was once 12 meters high and two meters thick and stretched for 3 km. Today parts of the walls, three Bastions, the two watch towers and the Citadel are left standing. The Bastions were built through the effort of the main craftsmen corporations, blacksmiths, weavers, goldsmiths, armoires and drummers and they hosted some of the trade centers of the medieval city.
