Arizona Trail: Anderson Mesa AZT-30

View of Prime Lake and the San Francisco Peaks from Anderson Mesa. The Arizona National Scenic Trail Anderson Mesa Passage (AZT-30) traverses Anderson Mesa in the Lake Mary area southeast of Flagstaff. The passage begins northwest of Mormon Lake, crosses Lake Mary Road near Pinegrove Campground, and ascends Anderson Mesa, passing near several small wetlands on its way to Marshall Lake, the most well-known of these magical and important wildlife habitats. Between Vail and Prime Lakes, the trail skirts around observatory facilities to the edge of the mesa, providing a stunning panoramic view of Lake Mary. On Coconino National Forest maps, the Arizona Trail is labeled as trail number 87 for its entire traversal of the Forest. Point and shoot, autofocus, auto-everything, trouble-free tool for these moments where I'm basically braindead or in a hurry. Well, this old Pentax is one I've tried lastly. I had to get up early to get this shot but at least I had planned for it, by checking the weather, sun position and wind speed. The light was perfect as well for a short time. There is always the X factor that you can't factor in though and for me it is usually scaffolding but thankfully there was no scaffolding around this morning. The positioning of benches of often curious. Typically they are placed to provide a suitable view of the surroundings or to provide social gathering space with others on other benches. Sometimes the positon of a bench may seem inappropriate. Here on the shores of Lake Ontario in Kingston, Ontario, the bench seems to be missplaced. It would seem that the view to be promotted should be the lake and Wolf Island beyond. During most of the day, this is a pleasant view of the windmills on the island as well as the frequent sailcraft on the lake. In order to take in this view, one must either sit sideways on the bench or turn one's head awkwardly to the left, risking future neck strain induced soreness. What one does not realize during the day is that this bench deliberately facing west so as to be ideally located to take in the spectacular sunsets in the evening over Lake Ontario. West Fork of Oak Creek

West Fork of Oak Creek On the third day of our camping trip on the Mogollon Rim above Sedona, we headed to the western end of West Fork. The canyon starts on the Rim, intersecting Woody Mountain Road, and cuts east, where it joins Oak Creek Canyon, a total distance of seven or eight miles. At the Oak Creek end, there’s an official trailhead (West Fork #108) at Call o’ the Canyon, which runs about three miles up the canyon. We decided to try hiking the canyon from the western end, where there’s no official trail… as a matter of fact, there’s a lovely Forest Service sign explaining that there’s no official trail there, you’re pretty much on your own, watch out for flash floods, and please don’t die. From the bridge, there’s a well worn path that runs for perhaps 0.5 to 0.75 mile along the banks of the creek. Eventually, the canyon becomes too narrow, and walking on the banks is not possible, and it becomes a boulder hop down the creek bed. Fallen trees and very large boulders make the route a bit challenging. At this point, while the canyon is very pretty, it’s not family friendly or very dog friendly (we had to give ours quite a bit of assistance). Given the amount of scrambling, I don’t think this would be a very fun backpacking trail, but with an early start, I believe this could be easily done as a shuttle hike. Originally composed in 932 AH / 1525 CE and dedicated to Sultan Süleyman I ("The Magnificent"), this great work by Piri Reis (d. 962 AH / 1555 CE) on navigation was later revised and expanded. The present manuscript, made mostly in the late 11th AH / 17th CE century, is based on the later expanded version with some 240 exquisitely executed maps and portolan charts. They include a world map (fol.41a) with the outline of the Americas, as well as coastlines (bays, capes, peninsulas), islands, mountains and cities of the Mediterranean basin and the Black Sea. The work starts with the description of the coastline of Anatolia and the islands of the Aegean Sea, the Peloponnese peninsula and eastern and western coasts of the Adriatic Sea. It then proceeds to describe the western shores of Italy, southern France, Spain, North Africa, Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, Syria, western Anatolia, various islands north of Crete, Sea of Marmara, Bosporus and the Black Sea. Xiamen University is famous for its beautiful campus. Located at the foot of the green mountains, facing the blue ocean and surrounded by Xiamen bay. The main campus is picturesque with beautiful scenery and parks. The university has campuses at Jimei and Zhangzhou in addition to the Xiamen campus located in the southern part of Xiamen Island. In 1919 Mr. Tan Kah Kee (陳嘉庚; Pinyin: Chen Jiageng), the well-known overseas Chinese leader, donated millions of dollars to establish and endow Xiamen University, officially founded in 1921. It is regarded as one of the most prestigious and selective universities in China. Xiamen University is famous for its beautiful campus. Siberian tiger El-Roi having a drink after taking a walk through his new enclosure. He seems to enjoy his new place which isn't surprising since it is much bigger than his old enclosure. The zoo and their sponsor put a lot of money, time and effort into the new area and the have the goal to start a new breeding program with El-Roi and his new partner Dasha, who came from Denmark. West Fork of Oak Creek On the third day of our camping trip on the Mogollon Rim above Sedona, we headed to the western end of West Fork. The canyon starts on the Rim, intersecting Woody Mountain Road, and cuts east, where it joins Oak Creek Canyon, a total distance of seven or eight miles. At the Oak Creek end, there’s an official trailhead (West Fork #108) at Call o’ the Canyon, which runs about three miles up the canyon. We decided to try hiking the canyon from the western end, where there’s no official trail… as a matter of fact, there’s a lovely Forest Service sign explaining that there’s no official trail there, you’re pretty much on your own, watch out for flash floods, and please don’t die. From the bridge, there’s a well worn path that runs for perhaps 0.5 to 0.75 mile along the banks of the creek. Eventually, the canyon becomes too narrow, and walking on the banks is not possible, and it becomes a boulder hop down the creek bed. Fallen trees and very large boulders make the route a bit challenging. At this point, while the canyon is very pretty, it’s not family friendly or very dog friendly (we had to give ours quite a bit of assistance). Given the amount of scrambling, I don’t think this would be a very fun backpacking trail, but with an early start, I believe this could be easily done as a shuttle hike.
