Upper Arlington Red Cross Unit, 1918

On August 19, 1918, the first meeting of the Upper Arlington Red Cross Unit was held in the ballroom of the home of Ben Thompson. Katherine Thompson (Mrs. Ben Thompson) was the chairman of the unit. The group met each week on Tuesday afternoons. With an average attendance of thirteen, the unit produced hospital shirts, comfort bags, pillowcases, and towels for the war relief effort.

At the end of World War I, the women of the Upper Arlington Red Cross Unit decided to continue meeting to discuss the needs and general welfare of the community. The group continued to meet under their new name, the Norwester Women's Club. The first meeting of the Norwester Women's Club was held on March 28, 1919, at which time Mrs. Frank Rogers was elected their president.

According to local legend, these great stones are the ones thrown at Odysseus in The Odyssey. The islands are referred to as the "isole dei ciclopi" (islands of the Cyclops, or Cyclopean Isles) by locals. This compliments the notion that the Cyclops once had a smithy below Mount Etna, which looms over the village to the northwest. Aci Trezza is a town in Sicily, southern Italy, a frazione of the comune of Aci Castello, c. 10 km north of Catania, with a population of around 5,000 people. Located on the coast of the Ionian Sea, the village has a long history of maritime activity. Aci Trezza is a popular spot for Italian vacationers in the summer. The patron Saint of the town is St. John the Baptist. The Festa of San Giovanni is celebrated each year during the last week of June 24 in his honor. Le Isole dei Ciclopi Il panorama di Aci Trezza è dominato dai faraglioni dei Ciclopi: otto pittoreschi scogli basaltici che, secondo la leggenda, furono lanciati da Polifemo ad Ulisse durante la sua fuga. I faraglioni compaiono sugli stemmi dei comuni di Aci Castello, Acireale, Aci Bonaccorsi, Aci Catena. Poco distante dalla costa (a circa 400 m di distanza), è presente l'Isola Lachea, identificata con l'omerica Isola delle Capre e che attualmente ospita la sede di una stazione di studi di biologia dell'Università degli Studi di Catania.
