Castletown Harbour

Castletown Harbour, Caithness, Scotland, UK. In a late day it was one of the ports of make slab, a lot of shipping went out this port take Caithness slab all over the World.And in 1820 work began on the construction of Castlehill Harbour, intended to allow the easy transport of flagstones from the local quarries to destinations throughout the British Isles and far beyond: Castlehill flagstone found use in places as far afield as South America and Australia. The first cargo of flagstones left Castlehill Harbour in April 1825: many more were to follow.
The workers in Traill's quarry and their families needed somewhere to live, and Traill established a planned village built to a grid pattern inland from Castlehill. This became Castletown and by 1825 was substantially complete. Traill also built Castletown Mill in 1818 to process corn from the surrounding area. Close by is the car park at the end of the beach footpath. This was opened in 2000 and gives access to the excellent beach and dune area to the north east. The 100 people employed in Castletown's flagstone industry in 1825 had increased to 500 by the peak year of 1902, when 35,363 tonnes of flag were produced, worth £23,239. But by the 1920s concrete paving stones had largely replaced the natural material and the industry died. Today's Castletown is a neat village built largely, as you would expect, from the local stone. The work starts with the description of the coastline of Anatolia and the islands of the Aegean Sea, the Peloponnese peninsula and eastern and western coasts of the Adriatic Sea. It then proceeds to describe the western shores of Italy, southern France, Spain, North Africa, Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, Syria, western Anatolia, various islands north of Crete, Sea of Marmara, Bosporus and the Black Sea. The Kotor Bay is based of several smaller broad gulfs, united by narrower channels, forming one of the finest natural ports in Europe and is flanked by an exceptionally rich variety of cultural monuments from all ages. Boka Kotorska was added to the list of twenty five the most beautiful bays in the world.

Face of Tide Predicting Machine No. 2

The output face of Tide Predicting Machine No. 2, a special purpose mechanical analog computer for predicting the height and time of high and low tides. The pen at the top draws the tide height as the paper moves beneath it. The dials below display the predicted tide height and the corresponding date and time. When the machine was in operation, the operator recorded the height and time of high and low tides, which were later reproduced in printed tide tables. The U.S. government used Tide Predicting Machine No. 2 from 1910 to 1965 to predict tides for ports around the world. The machine, also known as “Old Brass Brains,” uses an intricate arrangement of gears, pulleys, chains, slides, and other mechanical components to perform the computations. A person using the machine would require 2-3 days to compute a year’s tides at one location. A person performing the same calculations by hand would require hundreds of days to perform the work. The machine is 10.8 feet (3.3 m) long, 6.2 feet (1.9 m) high, and 2.0 feet (0.61 m) wide and weighs approximately 2,500 pounds (1134 kg). The operator powers the machine with a hand crank.
