Robert Robey started business in 1854, manufacturing portable steam engines and thrashing machines. His range of agricultural equipment rapidly expanded; in the Great Exhibition of 1862 "fixed engines, traction engines, ploughing tackle, corn mills, saw benches etc" were on display and soon a complete range of mining equipment was on offer from winding and pumping engines to locomotives, cages and kibbles. About Us About Robey Robey was an innovative firm. Traction engines were built to their own designs and to the patents of others, such as Thomson (road steamers), Savory (ploughing engines), Wm. Box and others. The fixed 'Undertype' was introduced in 1872 and electric motor pumps were on offer by the 1890s. By the turn of the century the firm had been incorporated into a limited company, the works had expanded to cover 15 acres and 20 000 engines and plant had been built. Stationary engines of many types were added to the range, such as the 'Quick Revolution' vertical, for electrical generation. Indeed Robey's 'Globe works' was said to be the first factory in the U.K. lit by electricity. Engines with simple slide valves, expansion gear, piston valves and drop valves were developed for application in many industries (our Class E is a good example of the latter). Colliery winders up to 84" stroke were amongst the largest of these, exported all over the world. Many are still in use in India and elsewhere. The Trust owns one of three examples preserved in England. 'Overtypes', 'Superheater' and 'Uniflow' engines were sold, the latter, the most efficient type of steam engine made, being a speciality of the firm. Engines were made to every configuration; horizontal, vertical and diagonal; duplex, tandem and cross compound cylinders; open and high speed enclosed, all in a variety of sizes and powers. The people of Stroma were very close-knit and noted on several occasions for their striking manner and self-sufficiency. "From their political situation, and the simplicity, sobriety and industry, natural to them, there are perhaps few islanders on earth happier than those of Stroma." Most people lived in single-storey houses which had two main rooms, called the 'but' and 'ben'. In these houses, there was usually a small bedroom (called the 'closet') and a porch also. The 'but' was the living room where all everyday family life took place; the 'ben' however was only used on special occasions, like when visitors came. Each room had box-beds, these were often closed in by folding doors or curtains. Wooden boards were covered with a layer of straw and a chaff filled mattress, both were renewed every year. The pillows were stuffed with the feathers of the croft chickens which were killed, plucked then eaten (little went to waste), blankets made of sheep's fleece were made at the mill; together this made a very cosy bed. Chilled White Wine

This photograph boldly puts forward the hypothesis that there exist a distant thing that heats stuff up which popularly is called "the sun". Furthermore it is hypothesized that this heating action by "the sun" will affect the average monthly temperature in an upwards direction in the nearest future. The hypothesis does not try to explain average temperature variations beyond this relatively narrow timeframe. Neither does it cover other geographic surroundings other than those depicted in the above photograph. It's still pretty cold though but I haven't been out much lately so I really don't know. Bus ticket machine, Viby Torv. What's so special about this, you may ask? Well... it's actually working! Back in 2011 a new citybus network was introduced in Aarhus. Part of that project involved the purchase of several ticket machines, like this one, to be placed at traffical key points in Aarhus. But there was a small problem: the new machines didn't work... something about technical incompatabilities, they said... but they were working on it, and all should soon be solved. Some time passed... the tech guys were still "working on it" and some progress was apparently being made. To prove the point, it was decided to set up the first machine, on Viby Torv (yes, this one), so that the system could undergo the final tests. So Viby got the first machine... hoorah! After a few days of testing, the system crashed completely, and it was back to the drawing board for the techs. Meanwhile, the poor machine just sat there, saying "out of order" Every now and then the media would write about these pesky machines, and ask if they would ever be fixed. And every time the answer would be along the lines of "we hope to have them ready very soon" Well, in february 2014 it finally happened, after a delay of 2Â½ years, the ticket machine on Viby Torv became operational and soon after the other ones were installed around the city. So if you ever visit Arhus and use one of these machines, remember to appreciate the experience - it was a long and hard birth!. Bus ticket machine, Viby Torv. Let the Sun Shine In #2

Bricks and mortar are far more opaque than glass. And yet, so often with old buildings, wall space where once, panes of glass let wonderful, uplifting natural light inside of otherwise dark spaces, now bricks and concrete blocks greet passer-bys. I say, let the sun shine in! For me there is no more pleasant light than daylight. It is a beautiful crisp and cheerful white. Artificial light, especially incandescent has a depressing yellow tinge that makes everything look dingy. Oddly, for me, flourescent, halogen and LED lighting is coloured to make it mimic that depressing (for me) incandescent yellow colour. And although most blocked up former windows have a lifeless and sad appearance. This building on Bond Street in downtown St. Catharines, Ontario seems to have bucked that trend. The bricked in windows blend in nicely with the rest of the wall. The window keystones and arches, showing where the windows once were add a nice architectural decoration to an otherwise drab brick wall. Even the two tone red of the wall (a result of painting over graffiti) prevents this wall from having an abandoned appearance. Still, give me windows! Give me sunlight! "Let the sun shine in.
