The honeylike color of this white-spored gilled mushroom inspired its common name. This mushroom is very abundant. Variable in appearance, returning each year in many shapes and colors, what we call Armillaria mellea, (also known as the "oak mushroom"), may represent more than one species of mushroom. Hypholoma fasciculare, commonly known as the sulphur tuft, sulfur tuft or clustered woodlover, is a common woodland mushroom, often in evidence when hardly any other mushrooms are to be found. This saprophagic small gill fungus grows prolifically in large clumps on stumps, dead roots or rotting trunks of broadleaved trees. The "Sulphur Tuft" is bitter and poisonous; consuming it can cause vomiting, diarrhea and convulsions. Aci Castello (Sicilian: Jaci Casteá¸á¸u) is a city and comune in the Province of Catania in Sicily, Italy. The city is located 9 km north of Catania on the Mediterranean coast. The primary economic sectors are agriculture and industry (in Catania). The city is neighbored by Aci Catena, Acireale, Catania, San Gregorio di Catania and Valverde. The city developed around the castle, which was built in 1076 by the Normans. In 1169, Aci Castello started to grow after an eruption of Mount Etna made the towns around it uninhabitable. Close to Aci Castello are the Islands of the Cyclops in nearby Acitrezza. Off the coast of Aci Trezza are three tall, column-shaped islands. According to local legend, these great stones are the ones thrown at Odysseus in The Odyssey. The islands are referred to as the "isole dei ciclopi" (islands of the Cyclops, or Cyclopean Isles) by locals. This compliments the notion that the Cyclops once had a smithy below Mount Etna, which looms over the village to the northwest. This impressive mushroom is found growing in dense clusters on stumps and logs of both hardwoods and conifers--and a number of associated species names are found growing in a dense cluster, as well. These species (if they are truly distinct), are all fairly large mushrooms that have orange to orangish brown spore prints, bitter taste, and stems that feature rings or ring zones. The central species name is Gymnopilus junonius, which is the correct name for "Gymnopilus spectabilis," according to the most recent taxonomists.
