The Shields Daily News for 18 December 1915 reports:

“SOLDIER CHARGED WITH THEFT AT NORTH SHIELDS.

At North Shields today, Thomas Henry Miller (24), a soldier, of Walsall Street Court, West Bromwich, was brought up on remand, charged with having stolen on the 22nd November, from the North Shields railway station, a brown leather kit bag and contents, valued at £3 19s 6d, the property of Lieut. Traill of the 3rd Batt. Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, stationed at the King Edward Schools. The case was fully gone into yesterday but the sentence was postponed for the purpose of making enquiries about the defendant’s character. An officer gave the defendant a good character and said he had nothing against him. The defendant was bound over for 6 months in the sum of £5.”

These images are taken from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 (TWAM ref. DX1388/1). This set is our selection of the best mugshots taken during the First World War. They have been chosen because of the sharpness and general quality of the images. The album doesn’t record the details of each prisoner’s crimes, just their names and dates of arrest.

In order to discover the stories behind the mugshots, staff from Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums visited North Shields Local Studies Library where they carefully searched through microfilm copies of the ‘Shields Daily News’ looking for newspaper reports of the court cases. The newspaper reports have been transcribed and added below each mugshot.

Combining these two separate records gives us a fascinating insight into life on the Home Front during the First World War. These images document the lives of people of different ages and backgrounds, both civilians and soldiers. Our purpose here is not to judge them but simply to reflect the realities of their time.

Every morning Mogadishu's fisherman bring their catch ashore upon which it is quickly unloaded and transported to Xamar Weyne's lively and chaotic fish market where it is sold for consumption on the local market and increasingly, for export to other countries. Over the last two decades, instability on land has greatly restricted the development of the country's fishing industry, but now that Somalia is enjoying the longest period of sustained peace in over 20 years, there is large-scale potential and opportunity to harvest the bountiful waters off the Horn of Africa nation, which boasts the longest coastline in Africa. Worlds Steepest St. Dunedin.

Baldwin Street Baldwin Street is recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the steepest street in the world. The street runs up the northern side of Signal Hill, a prominent hill overlooking Otago Harbour, at slopes of up to 1:2.86 (for 2.86m horizontal distance, a rise of 1m). The steepness was unintentional; grids were laid out by surveyor Charles Kettle without proper regard for the terrain. Indeed some of the streets he intended were unable to be laid. Unlike most New Zealand Streets, the street is surfaced in concrete not asphalt, as the tar would flow down the slope on a warm day as well as to provide a better grip in Dunedin's frosty winters. Stairs lead up the curb-side instead of a footpath. There are a couple of annual events held at Baldwin street, one being the Jaffa Race at the annual Cadbury Chocolate Carnival, where 30,000 Giant Jaffas, hard orange candies with a chocolate centre, are rolled down the street. Each Jaffa is numbered, and sponsorship is sold by various local and nationwide beneficiaries who get to keep the money raised. At the bottom of Baldwin St the Jaffas are funnelled into the finishing chute to decide the winners. Another major event is the Baldwin Street Gutbuster, a race to the top and back down again. Around 1000 people compete in different categories, but the record hasn't been beaten in over a decade. Both locals and people from all over the world come to compete. If that sounds too much, walk up in your own time. It takes about ten minutes, just to walk about 350 metres! But don't worry, there's a drinking fountain at the top. A shelf full of different types of cookies and treats. In the lower left corner you can see 'stroopwafels', these are a traditional snack in the Netherlands. The 'stroopwafels' consist of two thin waffles with syrup in between. Personally I prefer healthier snacks, but in some exceptional situaties a stroopwafel is nice too ;) I make photos that can be used for free by anyone.
