Abraham Lincoln Leonard Wells Volk, 1828-1895 Modeled 1860, cast 1880 Bronze From the curation card:On May 18,1860, Leonard Volk made a life mask by covering the future president's face in plaster, letting it set, and carefully removing it. Volk then used the mask to create numerous bronze sculptures. Because they were based directly from Lincoln's face, the sculptures have a freshness and level of detail that capture the intensity of the 51-year-old presidential candidate. At the time Volk made the life mask, Lincoln did not yet wear the beard that would later become an iconic part of his popular image. We went to the Huntington today to see an Edward Weston exhibit, and while we were there, swung through an amazing exhibit of Americana -- furniture,quilts,art, etc, all of it designed for the middle class. This pencil drawing caught my eye -- Ferdinand Brader (a Swiss immigrant who worked extensively in Pennsylvania and Ohio) did The Property of Daniel and Sarah Leibelspewrger, Fleetwood, Berks County, Pennsylvania. It is quite large and with a glass cover hard to photograph in toto because of reflections, so I chose just a detail. This drawing was described as depicting "a well-maintained and prosperous Pennsylvania German homestead". Many years ago I lived in Kutztown, perhaps 5 miles from the scene shown here. Current (1964) by Bridget Riley is a work at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. Done in synthetic polymer paint on composition board, the curation card notes: Current's undulating black-and-white lines appear to vibrate and form three-dimensional depressions that quiver on the painting's surface. The juxtaposition of black and white activates the painting with the semblance of movement and the appearance of other colors. In this and other early works, Riley "wanted the space between the picture plane and the spectator to be active." She later explored color contrast. Cornice block A.D. 41-68 Sandstone From Philae Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City From the curation card: This block originally formed part of a screen wall that connected the four front columns and sidewalls of the Temple of Harendotes ("Horus the Avenger") on the island of Philae. The relief represents the "baptism of Pharaoh," a purification ritual that was part of Egyptian coronation ceremonies. The gods Horus (not preserved) and the ibis-headed Thoth poured water -- here represented by streams of ankh (life) and was (dominion) hieroglyphs -- over the head of the king. These massive bronze busts commemorate them and are on Garfield Avenue in Pasadena, California across the way from City Hall. From the curation card: Jean de ThÃ©venot was a linguist, natural scientist, botanist, and traveler who wrote extensively about his journeys to the eastern Mediterranean and Turkey. He is also the man we can thank for introducing coffee to Parisian society in 1657 and for instructing the French in its use.
