This species native to Florida was imported to Europe to be kept as pets, only when they got too big to be kept the owners would release them in the wild. they are now taking over the habitats of native species in Europe, who are disapearing quickly... /This series of pictures were taken during my stay at home in Barcelona. Siberian Tiger Mom with Cub

Mother Dasha and one of her two cubs from the Zoo Duisburg in Germany. Dasha is just three years old and these are her first cubs but she is doing a fantastic job raising them! They are healthy and often you can see her playing with them. She lets them chase her and hides from them behind tree trunks and large rocks inside their big enclosure. The zoo staff is very proud of her for doing such a fantastic job! She and El-Roi, their male tiger, just got together in late April when their new enclosure was unveiled to the public and they already produced healthy offspring. After an early morning hike on Inner Basin Trail in the San Francisco Peaks, stopped by the tank in Lockett Meadow to enjoy the reflection of the snowy Peaks. 2009-05-30: Saturday evening, we were sitting on the front porch after our evening walk, enjoying a cup of chai and watching the sun set. There had been rain during the late afternoon, and heavy clouds had descended over the Peaks, hiding the mountain from view. The clouds had lifted in time for our evening ritual, and we noticed there was new snow on the upper tips of the Peaks. As we sipped our tea, we joked “If we were really motivated, we’d get up early, hit the Inner Basin Trail at dawn, and get some good photos before the snow melts off…” 2009-05-31: …so, at 4:00AM we stumbled out of bed, grabbed some coffee, got dressed, grabbed more coffee and rolled out the door around 4:30AM. We drove up the mountain, and hit the trail around 5:15AM. There was a bit of a breeze making the hike rather chilly. Everything was wet and green, and the aspens created a delectable aroma. Past Jack Spring (1.5 miles from the trailhead) we hit the frost line, and the vegetation sparkled (and the air was noticeably chillier). We arrived at the Inner Basin (the point where there’s a shelter and pumphouse, and all the Peaks are visible) around 6:45AM. We’d expected some shade still at that hour, and were delighted to discover the sun was shining right up through the low point in the Peaks (the north-eastern side, where the wall was blown out during an eruption), lighting up the entire Inner Basin for us. We wandered around a bit capturing various shots, then headed back to attend to our day’s activities. Hiking report View all the photos from this hike

Silver Studded Blue Butterfly

Silver studded blue butterfly (Plebeius argus). 2009-05-07: On the fifth day of our camping trip on the Mogollon Rim we were still looking to beat the heat by staying above the rim. I’d noticed a route marked as a trail on my GPS (the base map on my Garmin Oregon 400T) leading to a spot marked Lost Lake. We headed for trail, turning off of the main road onto a jeep track. The route quickly got rocky, and we assumed it was petering out, so we parked and started hiking. Within a couple hundred feet, the route turned back into a smooth, dirt, two-track road… basically, quite driveable. We hiked it anyway. There was a tree blocking the road about halfway to Lost Lake, but aside from that the route is a well maintained route, with a couple side-roads heading off of it. The road gently ascends to the top of a hill, where Lost Lake is actually a pair of tanks. The upper tank is quite large, and both had water in them. There were a few wildflowers, and butterflies and western tanagers were flitting about. It’s a very pretty area, and quite likely an excellent place for bird watching. Lost Lake is definitely worth a visit, whether hiking or driving. The tanks are surrounded by forest, and we took advantage of the shade to have lunch, enjoy the beautiful day, and catch a quick nap. Secret Canyon Trail

Hiking Sedona's Secret Canyon Trail. I'd forgotten my hiking boot socks, and happened to be wearing my regular FiveFingers. I'd rather have tried this in my KSO's, though it was nice to be able to quickly pop these off and shake out the sand. Parts of the trail are really rocky, and my feet got a little tender after 5 miles, but overall it was enjoyable to wear them on the trail.

We have had a lot of cloudy & rainy days in Pittsburgh, I got going early to take advantage of the sky this morning. We have had a lot of cloudy & rainy days in Pittsburgh, I got going early to take advantage of the sky this morning.

Well, I finally took the plunge and bought a Nikon D750 with the 24-120. This is the very first photo that I've taken with it, a JPEG right out of the box with default settings and some cropping. 6400 ISO! Unbelievable! As someone who had a hard time using more than 400 ISO with my LX7, this is going to take some getting used to. I've got a lot to learn about this thing. The road gently ascends to the top of a hill, where Lost Lake is actually a pair of tanks. The upper tank is quite large, and both had water in them. There were a few wildflowers, and butterflies and western tanagers were flitting about. It’s a very pretty area, and quite likely an excellent place for bird watching. Lost Lake is definitely worth a visit, whether hiking or driving. The tanks are surrounded by forest, and we took advantage of the shade to have lunch, enjoy the beautiful day, and catch a quick nap. After an early morning hike on Inner Basin Trail in the San Francisco Peaks, stopped by the tank in Lockett Meadow to enjoy the reflection of the snowy Peaks. 2009-05-30: Saturday evening, we were sitting on the front porch after our evening walk, enjoying a cup of chai and watching the sun set. There had been rain during the late afternoon, and heavy clouds had descended over the Peaks, hiding the mountain from view. The clouds had lifted in time for our evening ritual, and we noticed there was new snow on the upper tips of the Peaks. As we sipped our tea, we joked “If we were really motivated, we’d get up early, hit the Inner Basin Trail at dawn, and get some good photos before the snow melts off…” 2009-05-31: …so, at 4:00AM we stumbled out of bed, grabbed some coffee, got dressed, grabbed more coffee and rolled out the door around 4:30AM. We drove up the mountain, and hit the trail around 5:15AM. There was a bit of a breeze making the hike rather chilly. Everything was wet and green, and the aspens created a delectable aroma. Past Jack Spring (1.5 miles from the trailhead) we hit the frost line, and the vegetation sparkled (and the air was noticeably chillier). We arrived at the Inner Basin (the point where there’s a shelter and pumphouse, and all the Peaks are visible) around 6:45AM. We’d expected some shade still at that hour, and were delighted to discover the sun was shining right up through the low point in the Peaks (the north-eastern side, where the wall was blown out during an eruption), lighting up the entire Inner Basin for us. We wandered around a bit capturing various shots, then headed back to attend to our day’s activities. Hiking report View all the photos from this hike
