Siberian tiger El-Roi having a drink after taking a walk through his new enclosure. He seems to enjoy his new place which isn't surprising since it is much bigger than his old enclosure. The zoo and their sponsor put a lot of money, time and effort into the new area and the have the goal to start a new breeding program with El-Roi and his new partner Dasha, who came from Denmark. I have heard Eric Thomas. I have listened to Les Brown, Tony Robbins, Ray Lewis and so many others. The message is consistent about obstacles, fear and challenges. They all say some variations of go through and not around. I came across this obstacle on the trail in Short Hiils Provincial Park. I was fearless! I was determined! I was unstoppable! I went through... ...I went not under, not around but over, and then down. And then the pain arrived. And they were right. All of them said it would happen. I learned from my pain. I learned from my obstacle. There is a difference between figurative obstacles and physical ones. Some physical obstacles are better to go around than through. They told me that from my pain will come growth. They were correct, particularly the bump on my head.

Its an "Agfa Optima Flash Sensor" under a Chinese name. Its shutter is electronically controlled, you cannot manually override this setting and you have to focus by guessing the subject range :) My copy is not perfect, sometimes it skips frames, maybe the shutter is faulty, I have to get a better one :). Bricks and mortar are far more opaque than glass. And yet, so often with old buildings, wall space where once, panes of glass let wonderful, uplifting natural light inside of otherwise dark spaces, now bricks and concrete blocks greet passer-bys. I say, let the sun shine in! For me there is no more pleasant light than daylight. It is a beautiful crisp and cheerful white. Artificial light, especially incandescent has a depressing yellow tinge that makes everything look dingy. Oddly, for me, flourescent, halogen and LED lighting is coloured to make it mimic that depressing (for me) incandescent yellow colour. And although most blocked up former windows have a lifeless and sad appearance. This building on Bond Street in downtown St. Catharines, Ontario seems to have bucked that trend. The bricked in windows blend in nicely with the rest of the wall. The window keystones and arches, showing where the windows once were add a nice architectural decoration to an otherwise drab brick wall. Even the two tone red of the wall (a result of painting over graffiti) prevents this wall from having an abandoned appearance. Still, give me windows! Give me sunlight! "Let the sun shine in. A little update on Schrödinger since he's been home for a while now. He's a delight, very friendly and talkative. He is obsessed with food however and we now have to keep the kitchen door closed at all times or he will get into EVRYTHING. He has recently found out how to open the cupboards... yup. He gets along very well with Chi, they sometimes play together but Schrody is more keen on playing with humans and Chi isn't very keen on playing at all. But the frequently nap together. I can't let him out on the terrace alone unfortunatly as he is fearless and goes dangerously close to the edges, under the railings on the outer side... I take him out to take the sunlight on the leash and he still enjoys the sun from the window. Mainly my room window, which is his absolute favorite spot. We still need to microchip him and redo tests for feline leukemia and FIV (they were apparently done by the shelter but I have no proof of it on his health booklet...) but he misbehaves at the vet and it was already hell to give him his vaccines, so we are waiting for him to hopefully mellow down before injecting the chip and doing bloodwork. Streamgage vs. Streamgauge — One of the many questions that people have asked from time to time is the spelling of the word "streamgage" versus spelling it with a "u" as in "streamgauge." Since today is #NationalGrammarDay we thought it would be a good time for a quick history lesson on this question. Buried deep on Page 50 of the USGS report, "A History of the Water Resources Branch, U.S. Geological Survey: Volume I, From Predecessor Surveys to June 30, 1919" (on.doi.gov/USGSWaterHistory) there's a reference giving credit to the change in spelling to F.H. Newell around 1892. The author writes: "At about this time, F.H. Newell adopted the spelling "gage" instead of "gauge." As he informed the writer, "gage" was the Saxon spelling before the "u" was inserted as a result of Norman influence on the language. F.H. Newell may have been influenced, however, by the adoption of "gage" in the Standard Dictionary." Ever since then the word has been spelled without the "u". #AndNowYouKnow

The site of Sanxingdui, located in the city of Guanghan, 40 km from Chengdu, Sichuan Province, is recognized as one of the most important ancient remains in the world for its vast size, lengthy period and enriched cultural contents.

The first Sanxingdui relics were discovered by a farmer in 1929 and excavation has continued ever since. During this period, generations of archaeologists have worked on the discovery and research of the Sanxingdui culture. In 1986, two major sacrificial pits were found and they aroused widespread academic attention around the world.

The Sanxingdui finds are exciting, but they remain enigmatic. No texts have been found, nor is there any mention of this culture in the records of other countries. Analysis of lead and other elements in the bronzes indicates sources similar to those of other cultures along the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. At this point, however, the unique culture that produced these artifacts remains a mystery. They occur scattered either as isolated or clusters of boulders within a stretch of beach where they have been protected in a scientific reserve. The erosion by wave action of mudstone, comprising local bedrock and landslides, frequently exposes embedded isolated boulders. Although there are four main seasons in the year, there are also sub-seasons. It is now pepper season! This year's pepper crop has been unusually bountiful. Fresh jalapenos have been adding a crunchy and delicious zing to just about every meal. This week, the bhut jolokia peppers have begun to ripen! Pepper season is one of my favourite seasons of the year. This somewhat deform bhut jolokia made wonderful addition to tonight's pasta! I am now strongly looking forward to tomorrow's breakfast... ...and lunch... ... and mid afternoon snack... . Although there are four main seasons in the year, there are also sub-seasons. The water streets of Venice are canals which are navigated by gondolas and other small boats. During daylight hours the canals, bridges, and streets of Venice are full of tourists eager to experience the romance of this great travel destination. As night engulfs the town, tourists enjoy some fine dining at one of the many restaurants, leaving the waterways and streets quiet. The gondola is a traditional, flat-bottomed Venetian rowing boat, well suited to the conditions of the Venetian Lagoon. For centuries gondolas were once the chief means of transportation and most common watercraft within Venice. In modern times the iconic boats still have a role in public transport in the city, serving as ferries over the Grand Canal. They are also used in special regattas (rowing races) held amongst gondoliers. Their main role, however, is to carry tourists on rides throughout the canals. Gondolas are hand made using 8 different types of wood (fir, oak, cherry, walnut, elm, mahogany, larch and lime) and are composed of 280 pieces. The oars are made of beech wood. The left side of the gondola is longer than the right side. This asymmetry causes the gondola to resist the tendency to turn toward the left at the forward stroke. Venetian masks are a centuries-old tradition of Venice. The masks are typically worn during the Carnival of Venice, but have been used on many other occasions in the past, usually as a device for hiding the wearer's identity and social status. The mask would permit the wearer to act more freely in cases where he or she wanted to interact with other members of the society outside the bounds of identity and everyday convention. It was thus useful for a variety of purposes, some of them illicit or criminal, others just personal, such as romantic encounters. In 2001 the last of Nanton’s grain elevator row was threatened by demolition because of recent abandonment of the Canadian Pacific Railway that the elevators stood next to. Many worried citizens in and around the town of Nanton had realized that a part of the town's and province's history was about to be torn down and lost forever. The concerned citizens of Nanton had rallied together and formed a Historical Society appropriately named "Save One". Of course the original goal of the save one effort was to do just that, save one, but before anything could be done to save the elevator the Society had to gain full title to the land and buildings. Which was a big undertaking that would take three years to achieve. With so many volunteer hours from many local businesses and citizens, the Society was so successful that not only did they end up saving just one elevator, but all three remaining elevators. Many donations from members and surrounding farmers-ranchers, have been made and have helped in replacing the railway tracks next to the elevators the completion of many of the repairs and restorations that needed to be done on the elevators. Including painting the former Alberta Wheat Pool back to its original green and the former Pioneer elevator back to the original orange & yellow. According to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), an estimated $1.6 billion US dollars is sent back annually by Somalis living in Europe and North America. Some money transfer companies in Somalia have been accused of being used by pirates to launder money received form ransoms as well as used by Al Qaeda-affiliated extremist group al Shabaab group to fund their terrorist activities and operations in Somalia and the wider East African region. Fossil Creek seems to appear out of nowhere, gushing 20,000 gallons a minute out of a series of springs at the bottom of a 1,600 foot deep canyon. Over the years these calcium laden waters have laid down huge deposits of a type of limestone called travertine. That rock-like substance encases whatever happens to fall into the streambed, forming the fossils for which the area is named. Fossil Creek is one of two "Wild and Scenic" rivers in Arizona. This special designation was achieved when the Irving power plant was decommissioned, and removal of flume and dam on the creek allowed this magnificent creek to once again flow freely through Arizona's arid landscape. Most people come to Fossil Creek to sunbathe, wade, hike and birdwatch. It's also a great place to take photographs. The lushness of the riparian area strikes a sharp contrast to the brittle desert that surrounds it. Increasing popularity has led to the Coconino and Tonto National Forests to implement a parking permit reservation system in 2016. Reserved parking permits give visitors the peace of mind knowing they'll have a spot waiting for them in this remote location. Many visitors drive two or three hours to get to the creek. The masks are typically worn during the Carnival of Venice, but have been used on many other occasions in the past, usually as a device for hiding the wearer's identity and social status. The mask would permit the wearer to act more freely in cases where he or she wanted to interact with other members of the society outside the bounds of identity and everyday convention. It was thus useful for a variety of purposes, some of them illicit or criminal, others just personal, such as romantic encounters.

Fossil Creek seems to appear out of nowhere, gushing 20,000 gallons a minute out of a series of springs at the bottom of a 1,600 foot deep canyon. Over the years these calcium laden waters have laid down huge deposits of a type of limestone called travertine. That rock-like substance encases whatever happens to fall into the streambed, forming the fossils for which the area is named. Fossil Creek is one of two "Wild and Scenic" rivers in Arizona. This special designation was achieved when the Irving power plant was decommissioned, and removal of flume and dam on the creek allowed this magnificent creek to once again flow freely through Arizona's arid landscape. Most people come to Fossil Creek to sunbathe, wade, hike and birdwatch. It's also a great place to take photographs. The lushness of the riparian area strikes a sharp contrast to the brittle desert that surrounds it. Increasing popularity has led to the Coconino and Tonto National Forests to implement a parking permit reservation system in 2016. Reserved parking permits give visitors the peace of mind knowing they'll have a spot waiting for them in this remote location. Many visitors drive two or three hours to get to the creek. Kilburn Grange Cinema

My submission to Flickr Commons: Kilburn Grange cinema (1914-1975) on Kilburn High, showing Passions of Men among others. A film called "The Passions of Men" was made in 1914, which is the same year Kilburn Grange Cinema opened. I think this should be considered as having a CC0 license, ie no copyright restrictions, which is what the cultural organisations participating in the Commons give to the majority of their posted photos. After all, we didn't take the photos - those who did will largely be deceased, and I think the copyright on them will also have expired. In this case sadly, I have no idea who the original photographer was - it would be nice to credit them when the picture is used!

All the Way Home

The commute home after all long week in the office is a time to wind down and transition into the calmness of home life. However, this transition can be challenging depending on the nature of the commute. In large urban areas, the commute can be more stressful than the work day. I have commuted in major urban areas with clogged multilane freeways and have commuted in rural areas with quiet roads. I much prefer the latter. I fantasize about a commute that involves no traffic (of the motorized kind) at all. I imagine a tree lined path with no cars, trucks or even buildings. The only other commuters I would see would be four legged or winged. This trail on the east side of Short Hills Provincial Park in Thorold, Ontario connects the dead ends of Wiley Road and Eller Road. It appear as if this was once part of one or the other of these two roads. Today, it is a hiking, cycling and equestrian trail. An idea route for a bucolic commute without traffic. Macro photography is definitely not my specialty. I have the gear and have been challenged to try it. This morning I braved the winter dew, took this and survived the whole experience. Phew. I bought a bunny hutch!

Until now, my two bunnies lived indoors at night , in a rather small cage. So I decided to get them a big christmas present! A hutch! They now live outdoor 24/7, and their VERY happy about their new home! I covered the back and side of the open area with (safe) and thick plastic, so that the hay and litter box are dry, and so that the wind dosnt go in the cage. (and its so warm inside! I wish I could go in there with them!). They still have ilimited acces to the whole terasse (wich is huge, bigger than most backyards), but they have a bigger, nicer place to sleep, play and eat in!. The Moeraki Boulders are unusually large and spherical boulders lying along a stretch of Koekohe Beach on the wave-cut Otago coast of New Zealand between Moeraki and Hampden. They occur scattered either as isolated or clusters of boulders within a stretch of beach where they have been protected in a scientific reserve. The erosion by wave action of mudstone, comprising local bedrock and landslides, frequently exposes embedded isolated boulders. These boulders are grey-colored septarian concretions, which have been exhumed from the mudstone enclosing them and concentrated on the beach by coastal erosion. The silvereye has a wide distribution throughout New Zealand. They can be found from sea level to above the tree line but they are not abundant in deep forest or open grassland. Slightly smaller than a sparrow, the silvereye is olive-green with a ring of white feathers around the eye. Males have slightly brighter plumage than females. They have a fine tapered bill and a brush tipped tongue like the tui and bellbird. Silvereyes mainly eat insects, fruit and nectar. The silvereye was first recorded in New Zealand in 1832 and since there is no evidence that it was artificially introduced, it is classified as a native species.
