Western tanager. 2009-05-07: On the fifth day of our camping trip on the Mogollon Rim we were still looking to beat the heat by staying above the rim. I’d noticed a route marked as a trail on my GPS (the base map on my Garmin Oregon 400T) leading to a spot marked Lost Lake. We headed for trail, turning off of the main road onto a jeep track. The route quickly got rocky, and we assumed it was petering out, so we parked and started hiking. Within a couple hundred feet, the route turned back into a smooth, dirt, two-track road… basically, quite driveable. We hiked it anyway. There was a tree blocking the road about halfway to Lost Lake, but aside from that the route is a well maintained route, with a couple side-roads heading off of it. The road gently ascends to the top of a hill, where Lost Lake is actually a pair of tanks. The upper tank is quite large, and both had water in them. There were a few wildflowers, and butterflies and western tanagers were flitting about. It’s a very pretty area, and quite likely an excellent place for bird watching. Lost Lake is definitely worth a visit, whether hiking or driving. The tanks are surrounded by forest, and we took advantage of the shade to have lunch, enjoy the beautiful day, and catch a quick nap. Established in 1880, the Taiping Lake Garden is one of the oldest garden in Malaysia. This 62 hectares of park is also known as Taman Tasik Taiping in the Malay language. The huge lake was formerly a tin mine but was since transformed into a beautiful well used and well maintained park where flowers, birds, insects, animals and lush greeneries thrive. There was a tree blocking the road about halfway to Lost Lake, but aside from that the route is a well maintained route, with a couple side-roads heading off of it. The road gently ascends to the top of a hill, where Lost Lake is actually a pair of tanks. The upper tank is quite large, and both had water in them. There were a few wildflowers, and butterflies and western tanagers were flitting about. It’s a very pretty area, and quite likely an excellent place for bird watching. Lost Lake is definitely worth a visit, whether hiking or driving. The tanks are surrounded by forest, and we took advantage of the shade to have lunch, enjoy the beautiful day, and catch a quick nap. Silver Studded Blue Butterfly

Silver studded blue butterfly (Plebeius argus). 2009-05-07: On the fifth day of our camping trip on the Mogollon Rim we were still looking to beat the heat by staying above the rim. I’d noticed a route marked as a trail on my GPS (the base map on my Garmin Oregon 400T) leading to a spot marked Lost Lake. We headed for trail, turning off of the main road onto a jeep track. The route quickly got rocky, and we assumed it was petering out, so we parked and started hiking. Within a couple hundred feet, the route turned back into a smooth, dirt, two-track road… basically, quite driveable. We hiked it anyway. West Fork of Oak Creek Canyon No. 108

The brilliant red, orange, and yellows of changing maple leaves mark the start of fall color in the West Fork of Oak Creek Canyon, October 12, 2016. There are a number of reasons why West Fork is one of the most popular trails on the Coconino National Forest. West Fork is fantastic throughout the year, but in autumn, the canyon is ablaze with color. Red and gold leaves float in clear reflecting pools along the creek, under a canopy of solid color. As for the trail itself, it's an easy stroll, but you do have to cross the stream in a number of places. Usually, that involves negotiating a few strategically placed stepping stones or taking a couple of steps in shallow water. The trail is marked and maintained for the first three miles. It ends at a deep pool in a narrow spot in the canyon. Parking is available at Call of the Canyon picnic site for a fee. This is a special fee site run by a concessionaire. We went to the Huntington today to see an Edward Weston exhibit, and while we were there, swung through an amazing exhibit of Americana -- furniture,quilts,art, etc, all of it designed for the middle class. This pencil drawing caught my eye -- Ferdinand Brader (a Swiss immigrant who worked extensively in Pennsylvania and Ohio) did The Property of Daniel and Sarah Leibelspewrger, Fleetwood, Berks County, Pennsylvania. It is quite large and with a glass cover hard to photograph in toto because of reflections, so I chose just a detail. This drawing was described as depicting "a well-maintained and prosperous Pennsylvania German homestead". Many years ago I lived in Kutztown, perhaps 5 miles from the scene shown here. In Halden, there are many old houses, most of the houses are from after 1826 when a major fire put almost the entire city desolate. The majority of houses that were rebuilt are wooden houses. The house on the picture is from an old residential area of Halden called Sørhalden (South Halden) and built in bricks which are plastered. The houses are generally well maintained. Halden municipal. Paragliding is the recreational and competitive adventure sport of flying paragliders: lightweight, free-flying, foot-launched glider aircraft with no rigid primary structure.The pilot sits in a harness suspended below a fabric wing comprising a large number of interconnected baffled cells. Wing shape is maintained by the suspension lines, the pressure of air entering vents in the front of the wing, and the aerodynamic forces of the air flowing over the outside. Despite not using an engine, paraglider flights can last many hours and cover many hundreds of kilometers, though flights of one to two hours and covering some tens of kilometers are more the norm. By skilful exploitation of sources of lift, the pilot may gain height, often climbing to altitudes of a few thousand meters.
